Job summary

Carus Corporation in LaSalle, IL is seeking a Senior EHSS Engineer to lead health, safety, and environmental programs across multiple locations. This role blends hands-on site presence with strategic system-wide enhancements to improve safety and environmental performance.

You will manage permits, reporting, audits, RCAs, and corrective actions, develop metrics, and influence the entire organization to adopt best-in-class EHSS practices.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in health & safety, environmental, engineering, or technical field with seven+ years of experience.
• Experience with permitting, auditing, and root cause analysis.
• Strong communication, leadership, and accountability across all levels.
• Experience with OSHA and Industrial Hygiene; willingness to advance to EHSS Manager.

Responsibilities

THE OPPORTUNITY

Reporting to the EHSS Manager, the Senior EHSS Engineer will:

• Manage health, safety, and environmental (air, waste, water, landfill) compliance, including permitting, reporting, inspections, and monitoring key performance indicators (KPIs) and behavioral patterns to ensure adherence to organizational and regulatory standards.
• Develop and lead the implementation of a multi-year safety improvement plan across the company
• Maintain EHSS policies, train staff, conduct audits, ensure corrective actions are implemented, and drive ongoing improvements in EHSS programs.
• Conduct root cause analysis (RCAs), identify corrective and preventative actions, and track them through to full completion.
• Support compliance programs and regulatory interactions, and maintain visibility into emerging regulatory issues or changes.
• Develop metrics, prepare data and analytics reports, conduct research using primary sources, and advise managers on performance trends and areas of need.

THE QUALIFICATIONS

The right candidate will be a self-motivated individual with strong organization, communication, and multitasking skills. They will be able to successfully revamp the company safety program and have the ability to influence the entire organization to lead & implement it. Your credentials ideally include:

• Bachelor’s degree required in health & safety, environmental, engineering, or technical field with seven or more years of relevant experience. Master’s degree in relevant field a plus.
• Strong critical thinking skills, ethical drive, and a desire to support best in class EHSS.
• Excellent communication skills (written and verbal), demonstrated knowledge of computer skills, professional attitude, and ability to interact and work successfully in a team-oriented environment.
• Successful development and implementation of prior safety improvement programs.
• A proven ability to lead, motivate, and positively influence at all levels throughout organizations.
• Experience with permitting procedures, auditing, and root cause analysis preferred.
• Experience with OSHA and Industrial Hygiene required; familiarity with environmental regulations a plus.
• Candidate must demonstrate competencies and ability to be promoted to EHSS Manager or serve as fill-in as necessary.
• An Industrial Class K Wastewater License and Certified Landfill Operator license, or the ability to obtain such licenses, are a plus but not required.
