Job summary

Schnackel Engineers, Inc. in Honolulu, HI seeks a Senior Electrical Designer to develop electrical plans and specifications for architectural projects across North America using AI for MEP®.

You will coordinate with clients and MEP/FP teams to deliver fully coordinated designs, perform critical electrical calculations, and contribute to shaping innovative software for MEP projects.

Qualifications

• ABET-accredited degree in Architectural Engineering with Electrical emphasis or Electrical Engineering with power systems.
• 5+ years electrical design experience with an MEP/FP engineering consultant.
• Advanced proficiency with NFPA 70 and NFPA 72.

Responsibilities

• Coordinate with client, MEP/FP/IT design team and other consultants to ensure designs meet client vision and are fully coordinated.
• Participate in meetings and conference calls as needed.
• Familiarize with applicable codes to project.
• Create electrical construction document packages using AutoCAD and related software including layouts, one-line diagrams, risers, schedules and details, and construction specs.
• Perform load, short-circuit, and photometric calculations to support design decisions.
• Coordinate with local utilities for service provision.
• Coordinate with equipment vendors for selection and specification of equipment.
• Provide construction administration (RFIs) and mentorship to colleagues.

We are seeking a Senior Electrical Designer to develop electrical plans and specifications for architectural projects throughout North America using our new, groundbreaking software platform, AI for MEP®.

Key Responsibilities

• Coordinating with the client, the MEP/FP/IT design team, and other consultants to ensure the design is consistent with the client’s vision, to identify and resolve areas of conflict, to ensure a fully coordinated interdisciplinary design, and to ensure the design schedule is maintained.
• Participate in meetings and conference calls when deemed necessary.
• Becoming familiar with the codes that are applicable to the project.
• Using AutoCAD and other software to create electrical construction document packages which include plans including electrical distribution equipment, devices (receptacles, etc.), equipment connections, luminaires, controls, fire alarm initiating devices and notification appliances, all associated circuitry, appropriate schedules and details, one line / riser diagrams, and construction specifications.
• Performing all required calculations to support design decisions, including load calculations, short-circuit calculations, and photometric calculations.
• Coordinating with local utility companies to provide the required utility services to the project.
• Coordinating with equipment vendors and manufacturer’s representatives for selection and specification of appropriate equipment.
• Provide construction administration (CA) services, including answering requests for information (RFIs).
• Provide mentoring and guidance for colleagues.

What We Are Looking For

• In possession of an ABET-accredited degree in Architectural Engineering with an Electrical emphasis or Electrical Engineering with a focus in power systems.
• Five or more years of electrical design experience with an MEP/FP engineering consultant.
• Advanced proficiency with NFPA 70 (National Electrical Code) and NFPA 72 (National Fire Alarm & Signaling Code).
• In possession of Engineer-Intern (EI) credentials in Electrical Engineering.
• In possession of, or ability to obtain, Professional Engineer (PE) credentials in Electrical Engineering.
• Exceptional communication and organization skills, including ability to prioritize tasks and multitask.
• Ability to work independently and efficiently upon receiving necessary direction and information.
• Thrive in fast-paced environments with desire to work efficiently.
