Job summary

Schnackel Engineers, Inc. in Omaha, NE is seeking a Fire Protection Designer to develop fire sprinkler plans and specifications using our AI for MEP® platform. You will design systems, perform calculations, and coordinate with clients and teams across North America.

You will leverage AutoCAD and our software to deliver high-quality, fully coordinated design packages while supporting project timelines and NFPA 72 compliance.

Qualifications

• Associate's degree or higher in Fire Protection Technology, Engineering Technology, CAD, or Architectural Engineering.
• Experience in fire sprinkler design for MEP/FP projects.
• Knowledge of NFPA 72 and industry standards.
• Experience with AutoSprink or similar design software.

Responsibilities

• Coordinate with the client and MEP/FP/IT design team to ensure a fully coordinated design.
• Create fire protection construction document packages using AutoCAD.
• Design fire protection systems, devices, equipment, and specs.
• Prepare fire alarm layouts and riser diagrams.
• Perform calculations to support design decisions.
• Coordinate with utilities and vendors for equipment and services.
• Provide construction administration including RFIs.

Key Responsibilities

• Coordinate with the client, the MEP/FP/IT design team, and other consultants to ensure the design is consistent with the client’s vision, to identify and resolve areas of conflict, to ensure a fully coordinated interdisciplinary design, and to ensure the design schedule is maintained.
• Participate in meetings and conference calls when deemed necessary.
• Become familiar with the codes that are applicable to the project.
• Use AutoCAD and other software to create fire protection construction document packages which include drawings, construction specifications, and reports.
• Design fire protection systems including all associated devices, equipment, and specifications.
• Prepare superior quality fire alarm device layouts and riser diagrams.
• Perform all required calculations to support design decisions.
• Coordinate with local utility companies to provide the required utility services to the project.
• Coordinate with equipment vendors and manufacturer’s representatives for selection and specification of appropriate equipment.
• Provide construction administration (CA) services, including answering requests for information (RFIs).

What We Are Looking For

• In possession of Associate’s degree or higher in Fire Protection Technology, Engineering Technology, Computer Aided Drafting, or Architectural Engineering with an emphasis in Mechanical, Electrical or Fire Protection.
• Previous fire protection design experience involving fire sprinkler, fire pumps, and standpipe systems with an MEP/FP engineering consultant or design/build contractor.
• Knowledge of NFPA 72 codes and industry standards for fire and fire life safety.
• Previous experience with AutoSprink Fire Sprinkler Design software or other fire sprinkler design software.
• Exceptional communication and organization skills, including ability to prioritize tasks and multitask.
• Ability to work independently and efficiently upon receiving necessary direction and information.
