Position Information

Facilities Services is recruiting for multiple Sr. Custodians. The full salary range for the Sr. Custodian position is $25.17 - $34.53 per hour. We base salary offers on a variety of considerations, such as education, licensure and certifications, experience, and other business and organizational needs.

Under the direction of the Facilities Services Custodial Supervisor, the Sr. Custodian performs a variety of custodial/housekeeping tasks to care, maintain, disinfect, sanitize, and preserve campus facilities. The Sr. Custodian is responsible for the upkeep of their assigned building(s) to ensure a safe and clean environment for staff and students to enjoy. The Sr. Custodian may work independently or as part of a team in assigned work areas in a fast‑paced environment with project deadlines and close turnarounds while maintaining a positive attitude. The Sr. Custodian uses their own initiative and proactively addresses daily tasks to maintain a clean environment. Sr. Custodians communicate effectively with colleagues, supervisors, staff, faculty and students to ensure a good relationship with campus customers.

Please note: this posting includes multiple openings on various shifts – day, swing, and graveyard. Applicants must have current work authorization when accepting a UCR staff position. Requirements
Educational Requirements

High School Diploma.

Experience Requirements
  • Six months of experience in custodial/housekeeping operations or equivalent training and experience.
  • Experience in the safe use of a wide variety of equipment and machinery common to custodial services (e.g., stripping/buffing machines, vacuums, steam pressure washers, wet/dry shop vacuums, carpet extractors, raiding flooring cleaning machines, squeegees, brushes, etc.).
  • Experience in safe use of cleaning chemicals, their interactions, danger signs and disposal methods.
  • Experience in proper procedures for cleaning and maintaining a variety of floor surfaces including resilient tile floors, carpeted floors, and terrazzo floors.
  • Prior experience and ability to prioritize work orders, routine work, emergency requests, and choosing the proper materials and equipment to accomplish work efficiently and safely.
  • Experience working with a diverse student, staff, faculty and visitor population and providing exemplary customer service.
Minimum Requirements
  • Willingness and ability to work scheduled, unscheduled, and emergency overtime.
  • Ability to work effectively, following through on assignments with minimal direction and fluctuating workload.
  • Ability to read, write and communicate effectively in the English language with co-workers, supervisors, and the general public. Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Knowledge, skill and ability to apply proper procedures for cleaning and maintaining a variety of floor surfaces including resilient tile floors, carpeted floors, and terrazzo floors.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule (weekends and holidays; early mornings, afternoons, evenings or graveyard shifts) as needed to accommodate campus event schedules.
  • Knowledge, skill and ability to safely use cleaning chemicals and understand their interactions, danger signs and disposal methods.
  • Knowledge, skill and ability to safely use a wide variety of equipment and machinery common to custodial services.
  • Ability to perform heavy physically demanding tasks that require pushing, pulling, walking, standing, reaching, bending, twisting, stooping, kneeling, squatting, stretching, lifting up to 75 pounds, and removing heavy linen carts or refuse/recycling dumpsters from a loading dock using manual or mechanical equipment.
  • Ability to work indoors or outdoors with variable temperatures and conditions, including dust, smog, rain or temperatures ranging from high heat with humidity to cold conditions.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of UCR/UC policies, procedures and systems.
  • Knowledge and skill to use MS Office programs and email.
  • Basic knowledge of safe and proper procedures when hazardous materials are suspected; knowledge of safe and proper methods to clean up and dispose of biohazards and chemicals such as rodent droppings, vomit, blood, raw sewage or chemicals.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state regulations governing areas related to the responsibilities of the job, including SB‑198 Illness and Injury Prevention Program (IIPP).
  • Knowledge and ability to use desktop computers, laptops, tablets, and other electronic devices.
  • Ability to read and understand the proper use of Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS).
