Job Summary

The attorney will be required to provide counsel and litigation support in matters related to labor, employment, compensation, and benefits laws.

Job Description
Key Accountabilities
  • Provide legal counsel, risk analysis, support, and training to Vistra on employment and labor-related matters, as well as compensation and benefits issues.
  • Draft and negotiate terms of corporate transactions, including personnel impacts, workforce transition, outsourcing, contractor engagement, and service agreements.
  • Draft employment agreements, releases, severance documents, and other labor/employment-related documents.
  • Interpret and draft compensation and benefit plan documents.
  • Advise Vistra management proactively on avoiding or mitigating potential claims and on asserting claims.
  • Recommend resolutions for cases, including settlement options and litigation strategies.
  • Collaborate with Risk Management and insurance companies regarding claims and with safety teams on OSHA and MSHA compliance.
  • Supervise outside counsel and guide strategies, policies, and objectives.
  • Support compliance activities in HR and labor/employment areas with senior leadership, HR, and operations.
  • Provide day-to-day legal advice to HR partners and the business.
Education, Experience, & Skill Requirements
  • Juris Doctorate, with at least one state Bar membership, and ability to become licensed in Texas within 1 year.
  • 8-10 years of substantial legal experience in labor relations and employment within law firms and corporate environments.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with attention to detail.
  • Effective negotiation skills and experience.
  • Broad understanding of business practices.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities.
  • Proficiency in computer and word processing tools.
Key Metrics
  • Build partnerships with internal clients to identify and mitigate legal risks while supporting business goals.
  • Manage outside counsel and lead litigation, disputes, and claims strategies.
  • Handle labor and employment disputes to minimize costs.
  • Stay updated on legal trends and litigation laws to mitigate liability.
  • Manage outside counsel expenses efficiently.
  • Provide strategic legal advice on relevant matters.
