Senior Collaboration Engineer (Contractor)
Our client is seeking a Senior Collaboration Engineer to join their Workflow and Collaboration team. This is a hands‑on, developer‑minded engineering role — not a support or administration role — centered on the Atlassian ecosystem (Jira as the core platform) with room to grow into a broader collaboration tooling generalist across Slack, Microsoft 365, ServiceNow, and adjacent platforms.
Location: Client's New York City office. Remote candidates will be considered, but NYC-based/onsite candidates are strongly preferred given the collaborative, fast‑moving nature of the team.
What you'll do
- Serve as a primary engineer and technical authority for Jira and the broader Atlassian ecosystem, with deep, hands‑on build responsibility — not just administration.
- Design, build, and optimize Jira workflows, schemas, permissions, automations, and integrations, writing custom logic where out‑of‑the‑box configuration isn't enough.
- Develop and extend Atlassian Cloud apps — Forge app development experience is a significant differentiator for this role.
- Write and maintain scripts and integrations using JavaScript and Groovy.
- Partner directly with business owners to gather requirements and write user stories that translate business needs into scalable technical solutions.
- Collaborate with the team to help define and shape technical requirements as the migration and roadmap evolve.
- Extend support and engineering expertise into adjacent collaboration platforms — Slack, Microsoft 365, ServiceNow, and others — as the role grows into a broader generalist function.
- Move quickly and adapt to shifting priorities and deadlines in a fast‑paced, startup‑like environment.
- Produce clear technical documentation to support solution designs and internal knowledge sharing.
What you'll need
- 6–10+ years of relevant experience, with strong hands‑on Atlassian/Jira development and administration in an enterprise environment.
- Working proficiency in JavaScript and Groovy.
- Experience with Forge app development on Atlassian Cloud strongly preferred — candidates with proven Forge experience will stand out.
- Experience with Postman for API testing, development, and integration work.
- Solid grasp of workflow design, schemas, permissions, and automation strategy, with the ability to build custom solutions beyond standard configuration.
- Experience working across a broader collaboration/IT toolset (Slack, M365, ServiceNow, or similar) is a plus.
- A track record in scrappy, fast‑moving environments — startups, pure tech companies, or engineering‑driven organizations — where priorities shift and ownership matters more than process.
- Strong problem‑solving instincts and the ability to move quickly without sacrificing quality.
What makes you a good fit
- You're a developer at heart — you'd rather build the solution than just configure around it.
- You're a quick mover who thrives with shifting deadlines and evolving scope.
- You've spent time in scrappy, startup‑like, or pure‑tech engineering cultures (e.g., high‑growth tech companies, engineering‑first orgs) rather than traditional financial services environments.
- You take ownership, solve problems independently, and don't need heavy oversight to deliver world‑class work.
- You're comfortable partnering directly with business stakeholders to turn ambiguity into clear, buildable requirements.
