Primary Responsibilities

Assures that students with speech/language disabilities are provided with appropriate assessment, instruction, and support to promote their educational well-being and communication needs.

Knowledge Required

Professional speech and language therapy concepts, principles, and methodologies are used to develop and modify intervention plans to enhance/improve student communication skills in the educational setting.

  • Policies, procedures, and relevant legislation that guide public special education programs.
  • Ethical and professional standards as set forth by the American Speech, Language and Hearing Association.
  • Accepted diagnostic assessments and clinical observations to discern communication skills and their impact on the educational environment.
Performance Responsibilities
  • Participate as an active member of the assigned school's problem-solving team.
  • Collaborate with team members in determining needs in communication skills in the educational setting.
  • Provide services to address the speech (articulation, phonology, voice, and/or fluency), expressive language, receptive language, and/or pragmatic/social language needs identified through evaluation procedures or response to intervention process based on the adverse effect on education.
  • Conduct/participate in annual reviews/reevaluations for all students receiving services for speech and language delays.
  • Conduct/participate in parent-teacher conferences.
  • Develop building schedules for students receiving speech and language services. Provide a copy of the schedule to the building administrator and the Director of StudentServices.
  • Maintain ongoing caseload updates, including students in the response to intervention process. Provide updated caseload to the Director of Student Services three times a year (Sept., Jan., and May).
  • Order diagnostic materials and speech and language materials through the Director of Student Services, as necessary.
  • Participate in required department meetings for the speech and language pathologists.
  • Participate in the building Pre-Kindergarten prescreening as needed.
  • Complete all mandated paperwork in a timely manner.
  • Maintain speech and language attendance and therapy logs.
  • Abide by the code of ethics and professional behavior as outlined by the American Speech, Language, and Hearing Association and Hazel Crest SD 152½.
  • Attend mandatory district professional development opportunities.
  • Provide services to those children with speech and language delays that attend private schools in the district's attendance area, as assigned by the Director of Student Services.
  • Participate in all responsibilities as assigned by the building administrators.
