Job Details

Job Title: Speech-Language Pathologist Assistant

Starting Date: Immediately

Salary: $62,888 to $87,740 per year

Location: Harlandale Independent School District, Special Education Department – San Antonio, Texas

Primary Purpose

The Speech-Language Assistant (SLPA) provides speech-language pathology services to students under the supervision of a licensed Speech-Language Pathologist. The SLPA implements treatment plans and collaborates with educators and parents to support students’ communication skills.

Qualifications

Education/Certification: Bachelor’s degree in communicative science and disorders; Texas licensure as Speech-Language Assistant.

Special Knowledge/Skills:

  • Ability to use accepted tests and measurements to assess communication disorders and conditions.
  • Knowledge of evaluation, habilitation, and rehabilitation of speech-language disorders and conditions.
  • Ability to instruct and manage student behavior.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.

Experience: 50 hours of clinical experience and observation.

Responsibilities and Duties

Therapy

  • Implement the treatment program or Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) designed by the supervising Speech-Language Pathologist.
  • Conduct carry-over activities to help students generalize new communication skills.
  • Provide input on speech pathology in preparation for Admission, Review and Dismissal (ARD) Committee meetings.

Consultation

  • Consult with colleagues, students, and parents regarding the accomplishment of therapy goals, the needs of the student, and involvement in the remedial process.
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers to plan and implement classroom activities to improve communication skills of students.
  • Communicate with the supervising Speech-Language Pathologist regarding student progress and needs.

Student Management

  • Create an environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the maturity level and interests of students.
  • Establish control and administer discipline according to the Student Code of Conduct and student handbook.

Program Management

  • Compile, maintain, and file all physical and computerized reports, records, and other required documents.
  • Comply with policies established by federal and state laws, State Board of Education rules, and district policies. Comply with all district and campus routines and regulations.
  • Track and document provided services and student achievement to the standards outlined by the district.
  • Maintain a professional relationship with supervisors, colleagues, students, parents, and community members.

Other

  • Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.

Supervisory Responsibilities: None.

Mental, Physical, and Environmental Demands
  • Tools/Equipment: Standard testing equipment; standard office equipment including computer and peripherals.
  • Posture: Frequent sitting, kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting.
  • Motion: Frequent walking, grasping/squeezing, wrist flexion/extension.
  • Lifting: Regular light lifting and carrying (under 15 pounds), occasional heavy lifting (45 pounds or more) and positioning of students with physical disabilities; controlling behavior through physical restraint; assisting non‑ambulatory students.
  • Environment: Exposure to biological hazards, bacteria, and communicable diseases; may require district‑wide travel.
  • Mental Demands: Work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under pressure.
