Job description

Purpose Statement

The job of Speech and Language Pathologist is done for the purpose of identifying and assessing students with communication disabilities; planning and implementing appropriate treatment to minimize the adverse impact on student success; recommending treatment plans; and providing direction to Speech and Language Pathologist Assistants, Special Education Teachers and Instructional Aides.

This job reports to the Special Education Director.

Essential Functions
  • Assess students' communication skills (e.g. social articulation, listening comprehension, voice, fluency, expressive and receptive language, etc.) for the purpose of identifying communication disorders, determining program eligibility and developing treatment recommendations.
  • Collaborate with parents, teachers, physicians, administration, outside agencies, community resources and other professionals to communicate information, resolve issues and provide services in compliance with established guidelines.
  • Conduct workshops, training, and in‑service presentations for stakeholders such as SPED teachers, instructional aides, parents, staff, and classroom teachers to provide techniques and tools supporting speech and language students.
  • Coordinate meetings and processes for eligible students, including multidisciplinary evaluation teams, testing/screening, IEPs, parent conferences, and pre‑referral staffing, to present evaluation results, develop treatment plans, and/or provide training to parents, students and staff.
  • Develop therapy plans, interventions and educational materials (e.g. IEPs) to minimize the adverse impact of communication disorders, complying with regulatory requirements.
  • Instruct assigned support staff, such as assistants, interns, paraprofessionals or volunteers, on communicative disorders, assistive devices and feeding techniques, and on implementing prescribed treatment plans.
  • Interpret medical reports within the scope of practice to ensure treatment or intervention plans are appropriate.
  • Maintain files and records (e.g. progress reports, case reports, service logs, activity logs, treatment plans, quarterly reports, screening results) to ensure information is available for reference and compliance.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary meetings, workshops, and seminars to convey and gather information.
  • Perform site visits, including home visits, to provide therapy and assistance as required.
  • Prepare a wide variety of written materials (e.g. evaluation records, student schedules, progress reports, IEPs, case reports, weekly reports, activity logs, correspondence, memos, treatment plans) to document activities and provide written reference.
  • Provide speech and language therapy to students to minimize the adverse impact of speech and language disorders on student success.
  • Research resources and methods (e.g. intervention and treatment techniques, assessment tools and methods, community resources) to determine the appropriate approach for addressing students' needs.
  • Respond to inquiries from parents, teachers and staff regarding referrals, screening requests, treatment plan questions, and student educational needs to provide information or referral as appropriate.
Experience

Job related experience within a specialized field is required.

Education

Masters degree in the related field.

Certificates and Licenses

AZ SLP Certificate, AZ Health Department License.

Clearances

Maintain an IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card (Identity Verified Print) and ensure certificates and licenses are current.
