Job summary

Hamtramck Public Schools is seeking a Speech and Language Pathologist to support Dickinson East Elementary Gado language development and articulation goals. The role reports to the Director of Special Services and requires Michigan licensure, ASHA CCC, and a master’s in SLP.

• 60 hours in human communication and clinical techniques per state rules
• 300 clock hours of supervised practicum
• Early Childhood or Elementary cert preferred
• Demonstrated skills in articulation, language, voice and fluency
• Willingness to learn district strategies for language acquisition

Responsibilities

• Assist early elementary teachers in language acquisition and sound awareness skills.
• Use modeling, lessons, and team teaching to support language goals.
• Liaise between school and home to involve parents.
• Participate in intervention team meetings to support language development.
• Conduct speech/language evaluations and determine eligibility per MARSE.
• Manage caseload and develop/implement IEPs.
• Maintain records and reports in a timely fashion.
• Demonstrate strong written and oral communication.
• Work collaboratively with colleagues and stakeholders.
• Adhere to policies and regulations governing education.
• Engage in ongoing professional growth and demonstrate ethics and leadership.
• Consult with parents, teachers, admins, and others on student needs.

Qualifications

• State of Michigan license as a Speech and Language Pathologist
• Teacher of the speech and language impaired accepted.
• ASHA certification (Clinical Competence Certificate) required
• Individuals in their Clinical Fellowship Year (CFY) accepted
• An earned master's degree in speech and language pathology.
• A minimum of sixty (60) semester hours of academic credit in normal aspects of human communication, development, and clinical techniques for evaluation and management of speech and language disorders as described in State rule R340.1796.
• A minimum of 300 clock hours of supervised practicum experience with persons who present a variety of communication disorders.
• Early Childhood or Elementary education certification preferred.
• Demonstrated skills in assessment and treatment of articulation, language, voice, and fluency impairment.
• Willingness to learn in district-specific strategies related to language acquisition skills.

Responsibilities

• Assist early elementary general education teachers in facilitating language acquisition skills and sound awareness skills.
• Support strategies will include the use of modeling, lessons, and team teaching.
• Act as a liaison between school and home to foster parent involvement.
• Participate as a member on intervention team meetings to assist general education teachers with strategies to support children who are at risk in the area of language acquisition.
• Conducts speech/language evaluations and determines eligibility in accordance with the Michigan Administrative Rules for Special Education (MARSE).
• Manage caseload assignment; develop and implement IEPs.
• Maintains and submits records and reports in a timely fashion.
• Demonstrates proficiency in written and oral communication.
• Exhibit positive interpersonal skills and is able to work collaboratively.
• Adheres to school system rules, administrative procedures, local board policies, and state and federal rules and regulations.
• Engages in personal professional growth and demonstrates professional ethics and leadership.
• Consult with parents, teachers, administrators, and others concerning the needs of students and special services that are available.
• Assist teachers in the development and implementation of curriculum modifications and appropriate classroom strategies.
• Refer students and their families to appropriate community agencies and services.
• Cooperate with agencies serving students and their families.
• Provide therapy, follow up, and/or consultation based on student IEP's.
• Motivate students through effective communication and evaluative feedback
• Understanding of effective methods of MTSS implementation and SEL considerations
• Ability to effectively work with children and adults from a diverse range of cultures and backgrounds
