Job summary

University Prep Schools in Detroit seeks a Speech and Language Pathologist to design and implement therapy for students with speech and language impairments within the school setting. You will assess students and contribute to IEP goals and objectives.

You will collaborate with teachers, families, and a multidisciplinary team to deliver holistic services, monitor progress, and maintain compliance with IDEA and state MARSE regulations. A master’s degree and ASHA-CCC are required.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology from an accredited program.
  • Certificate of Clinical Competence (ASHA-CCC) and Michigan licensure.
  • Experience in school settings preferred.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Administer diagnostic speech and language assessments to determine IEP goals.
  • Progress monitor the programming and adjust services as needed.
  • Provide quarterly progress reports to guardians and coordinate with teachers.
  • Complete paperwork to maintain IDEA and MARSE compliance.
  • Stay informed on federal and state laws related to disability services.
  • Collaborate with Student Development and schools to design holistic approaches.
  • Engage families to support culturally responsive learning.
  • Coordinate with outside providers when services are via external agencies.
  • Maintain accurate case records and documentation.
  • Participate in professional development to improve knowledge and skills.

Job Summary:The Speech and Language Pathologist is responsible for designing, organizing and implementing therapy to students who are speech and language impaired. Speech and Language Pathologists are responsible for the speech and language assessment of students and the preparation of their IEPs, including the goals and objectives.Desired Competencies:Willingness to collaborate with others within the U Prep NetworkHighly developed organizational, planning, and time management skillsImplements and follows through on simultaneous projects and tasks;Displays pleasant, professional demeanor at all timesAbility to work with families to improve the educational outcomes for students;Contributes to the development of a positive, supportive environmentMaintains knowledge of changing trends and best practices in the field of speech therapy and puts this learning into action in the schoolsResponsibilities:Provides appropriate diagnostic speech and language assessments to students to determine their strengths and weaknesses for the use of creating Individualized Education PlansProgress monitors the programming and services for effectiveness and makes necessary changes to support the growth of the studentsProvides quarterly progress reports to parents/guardians, and keeps the classroom teacher and school administrator up to date on student progressCompletes necessary paperwork to maintain compliance with IDEA and MARSEMaintains current knowledge of federal and state laws and regulations and abides by said laws and regulations with emphasis on persons with disabilitiesAddresses the needs of the school, student, families, and community by collaborating with team members from the Student Development Department and the schools to design a holistic approach to any barriers or problems with the educational processPromotes family support of students’ learning experiences within the context of culturally responsive understanding and competenciesProvides services to students in ways that build upon individual strengths and offers students maximum opportunities to participate in the planning and direction of their own learning experienceProvides appropriate scheduling that does not interfere with core instructionConfers with the classroom teacher developing strategies and interventionsDevelops and provides training and educational programs that address the goals and mission of the educational institutionAssists students and their families in gaining access to formal and informal community and/or educational resources that will support the goals of the studentsCollaborates with outside providers, when necessary, to coordinate services for students who receive speech and language therapy from outside agenciesAssists in the evaluation of effective departmental, school-based, system, community, and statewide programsMaintains accurate case records and documentationParticipates in appropriate professional development activities to improve knowledge and skillsEducation/Experience:Holds a master’s degree from an accredited educational programHolds a certificate of clinical competence (ASHA)Holds appropriate speech and language certification in the State of MichiganPreferred experience working with children in a school settingStrong communication skills, verbal and writtenCohesive team ethic; ability to work with others to create comprehensive Independent Educational PlansProven success in implementing systems for record and case management.
