Job summary

Nemours Children's Health in Wilmington, NC seeks a General Surgery Specialty Nurse to provide direct and indirect care in ambulatory and outpatient settings, applying the nursing process with development and family dynamics.

The role is 40 hours per week, Monday–Friday, with responsibilities including ongoing assessment, patient teaching, care coordination, and collaboration with the health care team to improve outcomes.

Qualifications

• BSN is required.
• Active Delaware (or compact state) Registered Nurse Licensure Required. Application for Registered Nurse License in Pennsylvania and New Jersey within 30 days of hire.
• Three years of pediatric clinical experience.
• American Heart Association BLS required.

Responsibilities

• Assist with minor surgical procedures during office hours.
• Performs ongoing assessment and evaluation of patient progress and revision of interdisciplinary plan of care related to patient needs.
• Identifies patient/family need for further resources and initiates appropriate teaching and/or referrals.
• Participates in responding to patient phone calls.
• Explains treatment regimens to patient/family after discussing with the physician.
• Demonstrates ability to share clinical knowledge with other members of the health care team; collaborates with Nursing Education Department.
• Acts as a liaison between families and health care team.
• Participates in development of standards of care for the specialty patient population.
• Demonstrates proficiency in care of all ages; neonates, pediatrics, adolescents and adults.
• Participates in Quality/Process Assessment and Improvement programs.

The General Surgery Specialty Nurse is responsible for an area of specialized nursing practice and provides direct and indirect care to patients and their families in the ambulatory, and outpatient settings. The Specialty Nurse utilizes the nursing process as a basis for providing and evaluating nursing care and applies knowledge of growth and development, pathophysiology and family dynamics in delivery of care.
