Job summary

The General Surgery Specialty Nurse at Nemours Children's Health provides direct and indirect care to ambulatory and outpatient pediatric patients, applying the nursing process and growth/development knowledge.

Responsibilities include assisting with minor procedures, ongoing patient assessment, coordinating with the care team, educating families, and ensuring high-quality standards across age groups from neonates to adults in a pediatric setting.

Qualifications

• BSN required.
• Active Delaware (or compact state) RN licensure.
• Three years pediatric clinical experience.
• American Heart Association BLS required.

Responsibilities

• Assist with minor surgical procedures during office hours.
• Ongoing assessment and evaluation of patient progress; revise interdisciplinary care plans.
• Identify patient/family needs for resources; initiate teaching and referrals.
• Respond to patient phone calls and explain regimens after physician discussion.
• Share clinical knowledge with health care team; collaborate with Nursing Education.
• Act as liaison between families and health care team.
• Apply subspecialty nursing knowledge per Nurse Practice Act and hospital policy.
• Contribute to development of standards of care for the specialty population.
• Care for neonates, pediatrics, adolescents and adults as needed.
• Identify learning needs and pursue professional development.
• Participate in Quality/Process Improvement initiatives.

Job Description

The General Surgery Specialty Nurse is responsible for an area of specialized nursing practice and provides direct and indirect care to patients and their families in the ambulatory, and outpatient settings. The Specialty Nurse utilizes the nursing process as a basis for providing and evaluating nursing care and applies knowledge of growth and development, pathophysiology and family dynamics in delivery of care.

Schedule

40 hours per week, Monday - Friday

Responsibilities

• Assist with minor surgical procedures during office hours
• Performs ongoing assessment and evaluation of patient progress and revision of interdisciplinary plan of care related to patient needs.
• Identifies patient/family need for further resources and initiates appropriate teaching and/or referrals.
• Participates in responding to patient phone calls. Explains treatment regimens to patient/family after having discussed with the physician.
• Demonstrates ability to share clinical knowledge with other members of the health care team; works collaboratively with Nursing Education Department to share subspecialty knowledge with nursing staff.
• Acts as a liaison between families and members of the health care team.
• Utilizes specialized body of knowledge and technical skills in nursing practice related to subspecialty in accordance with the Nurse Practice Act, hospital policy and protocol.
• Participates in the development of standards of care for the specialty patient population.
• Demonstrates proficiency in the care of all ages; neonates, pediatrics, adolescents and adults.
• Recognizes and identifies own learning needs and responsibility for continual development; strives to increase knowledge and identifies goals for professional growth.
• Responsible for participation in departmental and hospital programs for Quality/Process Assessment and Improvement, identifying opportunities to improve services, making recommendations and implementing actions as appropriate and consistent with the goals of the Nemours Foundation.

Qualifications

• BSN required
• Active Delaware (or compact state) Registered Nurse Licensure Required. Application for Registered Nurse License in Pennsylvania and New Jersey within 30 days of hire.
• Three years of pediatric clinical experience
• American Heart Association BLS required
