Job summary

Nemours Children's Health is seeking a Specialty Nurse-General Surgery to support ambulatory and outpatient services for pediatric patients and their families. The role applies the nursing process to deliver comprehensive care, considering growth, development, and family dynamics.

The schedule is 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday, with duties including assessment, education, referrals, and collaboration with the health care team to improve quality and standards of care.

Qualifications

• BSN required.
• Active Delaware (or compact state) RN licensure required; PA/NJ licensure within 30 days of hire.
• Three years of pediatric clinical experience.
• American Heart Association BLS required.

Responsibilities

• Assist with minor surgical procedures during office hours.
• Ongoing assessment and evaluation of patient progress and revision of interdisciplinary plan of care.
• Identify patient/family needs for further resources and initiate referrals.
• Respond to patient phone calls and explain treatment regimens after physician discussion.
• Share clinical knowledge with nursing staff and collaborate with Nursing Education Department.
• Act as liaison between families and health care team.
• Apply nursing knowledge per Nurse Practice Act and hospital policy.
• Contribute to development of standards of care for specialty patient population.
• Demonstrate care for neonates to adults and support diverse age groups.
• Pursue professional development and learning goals.
• Participate in Quality/Process Improvement programs.

Specialty Nurse-General Surgery (Finance)

The General Surgery Specialty Nurse is responsible for an area of specialized nursing practice and provides direct and indirect care to patients and their families in the ambulatory, and outpatient settings. The Specialty Nurse utilizes the nursing process as a basis for providing and evaluating nursing care and applies knowledge of growth and development, pathophysiology and family dynamics in delivery of care.

Schedule: 40 hours per week, Monday - Friday

• Assist with minor surgical procedures during office hours
• Performs ongoing assessment and evaluation of patient progress and revision of interdisciplinary plan of care related to patient needs.
• Identifies patient/family need for further resources and initiates appropriate teaching and/or referrals.
• Participates in responding to patient phone calls. Explains treatment regimens to patient/family after having discussed with the physician.
• Demonstrates ability to share clinical knowledge with other members of the health care team; works collaboratively with Nursing Education Department to share subspecialty knowledge with nursing staff.
• Acts as a liaison between families and members of the health care team.
• Utilizes specialized body of knowledge and technical skills in nursing practice related to subspecialty in accordance with the Nurse Practice Act, hospital policy and protocol.
• Participates in the development of standards of care for the specialty patient population.
• Demonstrates proficiency in the care of all ages; neonates, pediatrics, adolescents and adults.
• Recognizes and identifies own learning needs and responsibility for continual development; strives to increase knowledge and identifies goals for professional growth.
• Responsible for participation in departmental and hospital programs for Quality/Process Assessment and Improvement, identifying opportunities to improve services, making recommendations and implementing actions as appropriate and consistent with the goals of the Nemours Foundation.
