Job summary

Nationwide’s Technology team in Scottsdale seeks a Network Engineer to install, refresh, break/fix, and cabling for network systems. You’ll monitor health, triage incidents, and perform maintenance to ensure reliability.

The role requires on-site presence with occasional travel, after-hours work, and close collaboration with CRE, NRI, and third-party providers. A strong network background and problem-solving mindset are essential.

We are seeking a dedicated and skilled Network Engineer to serve as a point of contact for all network-related activities at our Scottsdale site. The ideal candidate will be responsible for the installation, refresh, break/fix, and cabling of network systems, ensuring the highest standards of network performance and reliability. This associate will also be responsible for monitoring network health, triaging network incidents, and performing other network maintenance related tasks.

Key Responsibilities
  • Point of Contact for Network at Scottsdale:
    • Provide on-site support for all network-related activities, including installations, refreshes, break/fix, and cabling.
    • Act as the steward of Network MDF and IDF, ensuring closets are up to cabling standards, well-documented, and maintained in a clean state.
  • Network Carrier Activity:
    • Serve as point of contact for all network carrier activities.
    • Partner with telecommunications companies and other third-party technology service providers regarding Scottsdale network needs.
  • Collaboration with CRE/NRI and Protective Services:
    • Act as the direct contact for CRE (Corporate Real Estate), NRI (Nationwide Realty Investments) and Protective Services for all technology-related needs at Scottsdale.
  • Network Monitoring, Triage, and Maintenance
    • Triage, troubleshooting, and resolution of network incidents and events.
    • Perform other network related activities to support Nationwide’s network infrastructure.
  • After-Hours Support:
    • Perform provisioning and break/fix activities outside of regular business hours, including weekends.
  • Physical Requirements:
    • Capable of lifting network equipment weighing between 50-100 lbs for installations.
  • Project Meetings:
    • Attend project meetings related to network activities to provide insights and updates.
  • Travel:
    • Occasionally travel to other sites for network-related activities as required.
Qualifications
  • 3 to 5 years of IT Operations and/or Network Support experience.
  • Proven experience in network engineering and support.
  • Demonstrable network administration experience.
  • Strong understanding of network infrastructure and hardware.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks simultaneously, as well as prioritizing tasks with high business impact.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Physical capability to lift and install network equipment.
  • Strong thought leadership and ability to influence peers and superiors.
  • Ability to adapt to changing technology, organization structure, and processes within the department and the company.
  • Ability to create and maintain quality work instructions and job aids.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced knowledge in Cisco routing/switching, certifications a plus.
  • Experience working with and influencing/escalating with telecommunications carriers and third-party technology service providers.
  • Familiarity with corporate real estate technology needs.
  • Experience in IT Service Management, especially incident, change, and request management.
  • Experience in managing large scale network incidents.
Working Conditions
  • This role requires flexibility to work after business hours and on weekends as needed.

This role is hybrid from the Scottsdale, AZ office.

This role does not qualify for employer-sponsored work authorization. Nationwide does not participate in the Stem OPT Extension program.

Key Responsibilities
  • Creates and implements standard builds and templates for all technology platforms.
  • Drives requirements to meet current and future needs, tracks and reports capacity postures.
  • Applies secure software and systems engineering practices throughout the delivery lifecycle to ensure our data and technology solutions are protected from threats and vulnerabilities.
  • Analyzes reports and delivery recommendations to remediate capacity issues.
  • Implements capacity enhancements.
  • Designs standard and custom technology solutions for business partner projects, including pre-production testing, performance tuning, handoffs, and certification.
  • Delivers technology and product optimization, migrations and management, including technology and product design, planning, power, and environmental management.
  • Collaborates with others to develop meaningful metrics that drive fact-based decisions on a given product/environment/solution.
  • Conducts proactive system maintenance, disaster recovery planning, data backup and recovery as well as inventory, configuration and utility product management.
  • Executes production engineering processes, incident management, root cause analysis, problem management, change management, release management, and knowledge management.
  • Provides production support for all technology platforms.
  • Provides oversight for technical labs and development environments.

Reporting Relationships

Reports to a Technology Engineering Manager or Technology Product Manager.

Typical Skills And Experiences

Education: Undergraduate studies in computer science, management information systems, or a related field are preferred.

License/Certification/Designation

Technology certifications or designations are not required, but encouraged (i.e.: AWS, Azure, scripting and development languages, delivery methods, security).

Experience

Four or more years of experience with moderately complex integrated solutions and an ability to develop and modify existing solutions for specialized needs. Experience with automation of solution configuration and deployment and with system management processes and tools. Experience with concepts and solutions: IaaS, PaaS, SaaS and package solutions.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills

Strong communication skills, knowledge of planning, management and execution of Accelerated Solutions Delivery framework, Information Security acumen. Ability to influence, negotiate, and set priorities are needed. Insurance or financial services industry knowledge is a plus.

Other criteria, including leadership skills, competencies and experiences, may take precedence.

Staffing exceptions to the above must be approved by the hiring manager’s leader and Human Resource Business Partner.
