Responsibilities

Assists in various aspects of drug distribution that do not require a pharmacist’s professional judgment. Responsibilities include preparing sterile products and chemotherapy, managing controlled substance distribution, and other specialized pharmacy duties. Technicians work under the supervision of a pharmacist, following standard procedures and guidelines.

Minimum Qualifications
Education, Certification, and/or Licensure

For West Virginia Pharmacy Techs:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Registered with the state; those registered after June 30, 2014, must be nationally certified within 15 months of hire (PTCB or EXCPT).
  • Registered with the State Board of Pharmacy as a Pharmacy Technician trainee upon hire (except Pennsylvania).

For Maryland Pharmacy Techs:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Registered with the Maryland Board of Pharmacy upon hire.
  • May be enrolled in the GRMC Pharmacy Technician Training Program; registration with the Maryland Board of Pharmacy is required within 6 months of hire.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Associate’s degree, post-high school science education, or completion of a pharmacy technician training program.
  • Six months of pharmacy technician experience.
Core Duties and Responsibilities

The following describes general responsibilities; other duties may be assigned:

  1. Read physicians' orders, prepare medications, deliver medications, and order drug supplies for patient care units.
  2. Prepare medications for dispensing, including unique dosage forms.
  3. Understand standard pharmaceutical terms, abbreviations, and symbols.
  4. Replenish medications and deliver to patient care areas.
  5. Accurately prepare and deliver controlled substances, maintaining records.
  6. Manage inventory, replacing outdated or depleted medications.
  7. Label products appropriately.
  8. Perform arithmetic calculations for medication dosages.
  9. Check prescribed doses for appropriateness based on patient specifics.
  10. Prepare and label prepackaged medications, maintaining related records.
  11. Maintain inventory in pharmacy areas.
  12. Answer telephones and direct calls appropriately.
  13. Keep pharmacy and storage areas clean and orderly.
  14. Assist in sterile product preparation under pharmacist supervision.
  15. Prepare intravenous admixtures and sterile solutions using aseptic techniques.
  16. Enter information related to parenteral products into pharmacy computer systems.
  17. Manage controlled substances.
Physical Requirements

Must be able to walk, stand, or sit for extended periods, lift up to 30 pounds, push up to 50 pounds, and have dexterity for handling tasks. Reasonable accommodations may be provided.
