Job summary

The City of Harrisonburg is seeking a Specialist I for Traffic Signs & Pavement Markings in the Public Works Department. The role is full-time with benefits and offers a preferred hourly pay range of $22.35–$24.58, equivalent to $46,488–$51,126 annually.

Exact salary depends on qualifications and City policy. On-the-job training is provided and essential duties include installation, repair, and inventory control.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED with related coursework and 1–3 years of street maintenance, construction, or manufacturing experience.
• Valid driver's license.
• Willingness to participate in standby/on-call and inclement weather operations.

Responsibilities

• Install and repair traffic signs per MUTCD guidance.
• Print, fabricate, and assemble traffic signs for field placement.
• Monitor and replenish signage inventory.
• Operate paint truck system: load paint, beads, clean, troubleshoot.
• Assist with lane layouts and roadway markings after new pavement.
• Install and repair thermoplastic road markings.
• Set up and remove work zone signage per standards.
• Program mobile message boards along right-of-way per MUTCD.
• Perform snow and ice removal operations as assigned.
• Operate city vehicle during duties.
• Participate in stand-by/on-call rotation.

The Specialist I - Traffic Signs & Pavement Markings position is a full-time career opportunity with benefits and a preferred hiring range of $22.35 - $24.58 per hour (equivalent to $46,488 - $51,126 annually). Applicants may be considered for other levels within the department at an annual rate commensurate with qualifications. An exact salary will be dependent upon the selected candidate's qualifications/experience and in compliance with City policy. As a Specialist I in Traffic Signs & Pavement Markings, you'll:

• Install and repair traffic signs following the guidance of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices for Streets and Highways (MUTCD);
• Print, fabricate, and assemble traffic signs for placement in the field;
• Monitor and replenish signage inventory;
• Drive and operate the paint truck system, including but not limited to, loading paint and glass beads using the vacuum system, cleaning the system, and troubleshooting any issues;
• Assist with lane layouts and roadway markings after new pavement is installed;
• Install and repair thermoplastic road markings;
• Set up and remove work zone signage in accordance with regulatory standards;
• Program mobile message boards and place them along the right-of-way in accordance with MUTCD standards;
• Perform snow and ice removal operations and related duties as assigned;
• Operate a city vehicle in the performance of job duties;
• Participate in required stand-by/on-call rotation and duties.

Minimum Requirements at Time of Application:

• High school diploma or GED with coursework in street maintenance, construction, manufacturing, or related field and moderate (1-3 years) experience in the street maintenance, construction, or manufacturing field. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be used to meet this requirement.
• Valid driver's license.
• Availability and willingness to participate in a non-working hours stand-by program.
• Availability and willingness to participate in departmental operations during inclement weather.

Requirements After Hire Date (On-The-Job Training Provided):

• Class B Commercial Driver's License within six (6) months of hire date;
• Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Intermediate Work Zone Safety Certification within twelve (12) months of hire date;
• International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Signs & Pavement Markings Technician Level I Certification within twenty-four (24) months of hire date.

Successful applicants for this position will be subject to:

• Alcohol and drug testing as required by the Department of Transportation's Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA);
• FMCSA Clearinghouse Query;
• DMV record review;
• Job-specific physical;
• Criminal background check.
