Job summary

The City of Harrisonburg is seeking a Crew Supervisor for Stormwater Maintenance in the Public Works Department. This full-time, on-site role leads a field crew responsible for maintaining and repairing the City's stormwater infrastructure, including BMPs, pipes, ditches, and inlets.

The supervisor plans daily work, oversees equipment operation and safety, and performs skilled tasks such as excavation and drainage repairs.

Qualifications

• High School diploma or GED with 6+ years in lead/supervision of stormwater/public works/related work.
• Valid Commercial Driver's License Class B.
• Virginia VDACS Registered Technician Pesticide Applicator License.
• Virginia VDACS Right-of-Way Pest Control License or ability to obtain within 12 months.
• VDOT Basic Work Zone Safety Certification or ability to obtain within 6 months.
• Be available for rotating, stand-by and/or on-call emergency work.

The Crew Supervisor in Public Works is a full-time position with benefits and a preferred hiring range of $26.67 - $29.34 per hour (equivalent to $55,473 - $61,027 annually); however, an exact salary will be dependent upon the selected candidate's qualifications/experience and in compliance with City policy.

As the Crew Supervisor in Stormwater Maintenance, you'll lead a field crew responsible for maintaining, repairing, and cleaning the City's stormwater infrastructure, including best management practices (BMPs), pipes, ditches, culverts, inlets, and outfalls. This hands-on role plans daily work, supervises equipment operation and work zone safety, and performs skilled tasks such as excavation, grading, drainage repairs, vegetation management, and debris removal. The successful candidate will help address drainage and flooding concerns, support stormwater inspections and MS4-related activities, and respond to emergencies and other City needs.

• High School diploma or GED and extensive (6 or more years) experience in the lead/supervision of stormwater maintenance, public works maintenance, grounds maintenance, construction, equipment operation, concrete work, pipe work, or related work. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be used to meet this requirement. Related vocational or technical training preferred but not required for consideration.

• Valid Commercial Driver's License Class B.

• Possession of the Virginia Registered Technician Pesticide Applicator License from Virginia Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services (VDACS).

• Possession of the Virginia Commercial Pesticide Applicator License (Right-of-Way Pest Control) from VDACS or the ability to obtain within twelve (12) months of hire.

• Possession of a current VDOT Basic Work Zone Safety Certification or the ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire (or as soon as class schedule permits).

• Availability to participate in a rotating, stand-by and/or on-call work program for off-hours emergency response.
