Job summary

The Gathering Inn in Elk Grove, CA seeks a dedicated Specialist to welcome guests with empathy, provide stability, and support a trauma-informed, guest-centered environment during the grave shift.

You will handle intake, bed assignments, crisis response, and safe transportation while collaborating with staff and community partners to meet each guest’s needs.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Experience with homelessness, mental health, or substance use is valued.
• Strong communication and basic computer/documentation skills.
• Ability to pass Live Scan background check.
• Willingness to work evenings, overnights, and weekends.

Responsibilities

• Welcome and intake guests with trauma-informed, respectful care.
• Oversee nightly operations, bed assignments, check-ins, and transitions.
• Respond to crises with calm, de-escalation and coordinate with emergency services.
• Maintain a clean, safe, and respectful environment.
• Document guest interactions and facility needs clearly.
• Collaborate with staff, volunteers, and partners to meet guest needs.
• Drive passenger vans when needed and assist with guest transportation.
• Adapt to indoor and outdoor environments in all weather.

Who We Are

Since 2004, The Gathering Inn has compassionately reached out to individuals experiencing homelessness, aiming to welcome new beginnings and transform lives. Originally a winter-only shelter serving 40 individuals nightly, we have evolved into a multifaceted organization with multiple locations, serving nearly 500 individuals and families daily. Our mission is to meet people where they are, inspire hope, and walk alongside them on their journey to sustainable housing. Through our emergency shelter, permanent supportive housing, and medical respite care, we provide programs and support designed to empower guests toward self‑sufficiency and long‑term stability.

What You’ll Do

As a Specialist, you are the welcoming heart of The Gathering Inn, offering kindness, stability, and safety to each guest who walks through our doors. You help create an environment where every person feels seen, respected, and supported. In this role, you will:

• Welcome and intake guests with empathy and respect, ensuring a trauma‑informed, guest‑centered approach
• Support nightly operations by overseeing bed assignments, check‑ins, and transitions with calm and care
• Respond to crises with compassion and composure, using de‑escalation techniques and coordinating with emergency services when necessary
• Maintain a clean, safe, and secure environment so that all guests have a space that reflects dignity and respect
• Document guest interactions and facility needs clearly and promptly to help our team provide consistent, informed care
• Collaborate with colleagues, volunteers, and community partners to meet each guest’s needs through holistic and coordinated support
• Drive passenger vans when needed, assisting with guest transportation and personal belongings
• Adapt to both indoor and outdoor environments, including various weather conditions such as rain, heat, or cold

• High school diploma or equivalent required, related experience strongly preferred
• Valid driver’s license and readiness to drive when needed
