Job summary

Job description

Under the general supervision of the Lieutenant, Public Safety, the Specialist, Lock and Key, coordinates district access control/key-related services to ensure the safety and security of MATC by following established policies, procedures and general guidelines. Administers key services, monitors and reports potential access control/key issues to appropriate supervisor; reviews work locations; assigns and directs access control/keys to MATC faculty, staff, contractors, and project-based facility employees. Also, responsible for the maintenance and repair of all locking systems across campus buildings to ensure security, safety, and compliance. This position will work closely with the Public Safety, Facilities and Operations, and IT to support the security infrastructure of the college and ensure that all access points are secured effectively.

Work is detailed and diversified requiring independent judgment, analytical skills, and decision-making abilities according to established practices and procedures. Supervision received is general in nature using established procedures and general objectives and limited to problems or unusual conditions. Works both independently and with staff in a teamwork approach.

Lock and Key Management

• Lock and Key Management: Serves as District contact for approvals of key/access card requests, lock work orders, lock service calls and lock emergencies; provides technical assistance to district staff on lock functions, keying, locks and door hardware, card access system, and other related key matters. Evaluates floor plans and specifications relative to key card access and lock requirements according to departmental policies and procedures; confers with vendors on keying needs; makes recommendations on appropriate key and lock systems. Performs all tasks related in the design, procurement, installation, maintenance and operation of the college wide locks, keys and electronic access systems, to include the creation of lock schedules to maintain the college master key and building master key system.
• Recordkeeping and Reporting: Develops, implements, and maintains District records and reporting systems to track and monitor lock projects, expenditures, and other key-related services activity. Maintains accurate records of all key issuance, repairs, and replacements. Prepares detailed reports on key and lock system activities, including any incidents or breaches. Reports system malfunctions and recommends improvements to Public Safety and Facilities and Operations.
• Training and Education: Trains and directs staff of Lock and Key Service Technicians in related key/access control systems and recordkeeping duties. Composes internal and external correspondence related to access control matters; may proofread, verify, and correct written materials and reports to assure accuracy and completeness.
• Inventory and Supply Management: Maintains inventory of locks, exit devices, alarm parts, and supplies; orders parts and supplies as necessary to maintain inventory; confers with vendors regarding orders.
• Security Support: Maintains District key and card access systems, inventories, and monitors District access control procedures to ensure district security; schedules and coordinates contracted work according to location and urgency of need. Ensures that all locking systems comply with local, state, and federal security regulations. Assists in the development and implementation of emergency security protocols related to building access.
• Preventative Maintenance and Compliance: Conducts regular inspections of locking systems to identify potential vulnerabilities and maintain system integrity. Installs, maintains and repairs locking systems and associated hardware on doors and door frames as well as other areas associated with locking systems and associated hardware. Performs technical lock and key-related work, including the adjustment, repair and replacement of cylindrical lock sets, keywatcher boxes, deadbolt lock sets and desk and file cabinet locks.

Required Education & Experience: High School diploma or G.E.D or equivalency with course work in locksmith, carpentry, or other related building construction trades program; and two (2) years’ work experience.

Preferred Education & Experience: Associate’s degree and three (3) years of experience in building construction, carpentry, locksmith or other related building construction trade.

Preferred Licensure/Certification: License or Certification as Locksmith or Carpentry and OSHA 10

Start Date: This position supports the Public Safety and is available to start immediately.

Hours: This position is a full-time position and works a minimum of 40 hours a week (in-person). All work must be performed in the state of Wisconsin.

Compensation: Hourly pay rates are listed up to the midpoint of the range and placement is determined based on years of experience, internal equity, and a review of the applicant's employment and educational background as listed on the job application.
