Job summary

Washington Business Journal in Washington, DC, seeks an editor to oversee special projects and editorial content across print, digital, and multimedia. You will plan, assign, and shape event coverage with attention to accuracy and high editorial standards.

You must be highly creative, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced newsroom. Occasional evening events are required.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in journalism or equivalent.
  • Five years of editing and project management experience.
  • Ability to plan, organize and oversee editorial content across print, digital and multimedia.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee all content related to events, including special publications, digital packages and multimedia presentations.
  • Plan and conceive editorial event content across print, online, video and scripts.
  • Assign content for editorial and event projects including stories, photos, graphics and data packages.
  • Collaborate with other departments to meet high editorial standards for events and coverage.
  • Develop and manage a pool of freelancers for top-notch content.
  • Support other editors in day-to-day coverage as needed.
  • Assign weekly Journal Profiles focusing on diverse representation.
  • Meet all deadlines for event-related content.
  • Provide leadership in large-scale editorial projects and mentorship to staff.
  • Utilize social media as a news gathering and dissemination tool.

Job description

The Washington Business Journal is seeking an editor to handle special projects. If you love news and you love people, this is the job for you. If you like to plan and then plan some more, this job is for you. If you come up with new ideas in your sleep, this job is for you. The Business Journal produces about a dozen special events and publications annually, and the selected candidate will oversee all editorial content across print, digital and multimedia, ensuring the quality, integrity and accuracy of the products. Publications include Best Places to Work, Women Who Mean Business, 40 Under 40, Real Estate Dealmakers and Fastest-Growing Companies.

This is not an event production or marketing position. The successful candidate will be part of our newsroom editing team, reporting to the editor‑in‑chief.

You must be highly creative. You must be detail‑oriented, disciplined and able to work in a fast‑paced environment, as you often will be working on two or three projects at once. You must be available for occasional evening events.

Responsibilities
  • Oversee all content related to events, including special publications, digital packages and multimedia presentations
  • Plan and conceive editorial event content – print section, online content, videos, scripts and overall presentation
  • Assign all content for editorial and event special projects, including stories, photos, graphics and data packages
  • Work with other departments to ensure event schedules, nomination processes, selection of honorees and day‑of content for the event meet the high editorial standards of the Business Journal
  • Develop and manage a stable of freelancers to create top‑notch content
  • Assist other editors in managing the day‑to‑day coverage as needed
  • Assign all weekly Journal Profiles, ensuring we are interviewing high‑level people with a focus on gender, racial, geographic and industry diversity
  • Meet all deadlines
  • Exceptional editor, proofreader, reporter and writer with knowledge of AP style
  • Able to guide, contribute to and lead large‑scale editorial projects
  • Multitasker
  • Able to use social media as a newsgathering and dissemination tool
  • At least five years of editing and project management
  • Bachelor's degree in journalism or equivalent
