Media Insights Journalist (Contract)
Remote, part‑time
Better Leaders Lab is a Do and Think Tank for good leadership and smart management in media and beyond, and a boutique strategic advisory firm. We work with senior media leaders, boards, and executive programs on strategy, leadership, and how AI is reshaping organizations. Most of our work sits at the intersection of journalism, media business, and leadership.
Founded in Vienna in 2023, BLL operates fully remote. We are a small, trusted, distributed team of experienced, independent media experts that values clarity, diligence, and thoughtful collaboration.
Better Leaders Lab is looking for an experienced Media Insights Journalist to join us on a part‑time, long‑term contractor basis.
This role is for a journalist who enjoys making sense of what is happening across the media industry and helping others think more clearly about it. You will scan reports, coverage, numbers, and conversations and turn them into short, sharp insights for lectures, board meetings, best practice case studies and executive programs.
This is fast, practical work. It is closer to online journalism and desk work than to academic research. The focus is on accuracy, relevance, and bite‑size facts and numbers that senior audiences can trust.
A core part of the role is using Gen AI tools to work through large amounts of information quickly and carefully. AI is used as a value add, not a shortcut. Accuracy, judgment, and transparency matter. We care deeply about responsible and ethical use of AI and expect the same mindset in this role.
You will work closely with the CEO while operating very independently. Most collaboration happens asynchronously and in writing.
Most of our work is focused on media and leadership contexts in Europe and the U.S. Familiarity with these markets and their media landscapes is important, and candidates based in Europe or the Americas, and with strong professional exposure to these regions, will feel most at home in this role.
This role is about influence and insights, not bylines. Most of the work will not result in published articles under your name. Instead, your insights and writing will shape slide decks, briefing notes, teaching materials and board‑level conversations.
We are looking for someone who enjoys writing as a craft and a tool for thinking, not as a beauty contest or a vehicle for personal visibility. If you take pride in seeing your work sharpen ideas, inform decisions, and elevate conversations as part of a team, this role will feel rewarding.
Most tasks start with a question or a problem to solve, not a checklist.
English must be excellent, both spoken and written.
German is a plus but not required.
You will report closely to the CEO and collaborate on preparation for teaching, board work, and strategic conversations. At the same time, this role requires a high degree of independence. From time to time, you’ll collaborate with the rest of the BLL team to fact‑check slides, prepare documents or verify content for case studies.
Most work is asynchronous. Briefs and updates are shared in writing, with short check‑ins as needed. What matters is quality, clarity, and reliability, not fixed working hours.
This role is well suited to someone who values belonging, wants a stable anchor client, and still appreciates the flexibility of freelance work.
Work is fully remote and flexible, with some overlap during CET or ET working hours when needed.
The role starts with a 2‑month trial period. If all goes well, the contract will be extended on a long‑term basis through to the end of 2026. This is designed to be a stable, ongoing collaboration, not a short‑term project.
This is a contractor position and does not include benefits or insurance.
