Job summary

Saint Joseph Mercy Health System in Michigan is seeking a Special Procedures Radiographer / Interventional Radiology Technologist to join the Surgery department at Trinity Health Ann Arbor Hospital. You will perform invasive and non-invasive radiologic procedures in collaboration with physicians and the IR Team to produce high-quality diagnostic images.

The role requires ARRT registration, an accredited radiologic program, and BLS certification.

Qualifications

  • Completion of an accredited Radiologic Technologist/Radiography program.
  • Registered as a Radiographer by ARRT.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from AHA.
  • Knowledge of CT techniques and cross-sectional anatomy to obtain quality images.
  • Emphasis on reducing patient radiation dose (ALARA).
  • Ability to recognize pathology and tailor examinations.

Responsibilities

  • Review requests for radiologic procedures and schedule patients for specialized diagnostic procedures.
  • Ensure documentation with procedural and billing codes.
  • Determine proper radiographic technique parameters and adjust equipment for accurate images.
  • Provide specialized radiographic images and consult with radiologists/IR team.
  • Perform reimaging and forward completed images to interpretation sites.
  • Assist radiologists/surgeons in special procedures and manage contrast media.
  • Practice sterile and infection control techniques.
  • Assist patients with positioning and explain procedures to reduce anxiety.
  • Operate fluoroscopic, radiographic, and CT equipment.
  • Manage tomographic image adjustments to optimize diagnostics.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Position Purpose

The Special Procedures Radiographer / Interventional Radiology Technologist performs a variety of specialized invasive and non-invasive diagnostic radiologic procedures in collaboration with the physician/APP and the IR Team. They are responsible to review the Physician Order and reason for exam, assist with/Set up the IR Procedure and work closely with the Radiology leadership and the IR Physicians/APP to produce the most diagnostic images possible in accordance with the department protocols.

Required Qualifications
  • Completion of an accredited Radiologic Technologist/Radiography program
  • Registered as a Radiographer by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT)
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association (AHA)
  • Must have analytical skills necessary to acquire and effectively utilize knowledge of computerized tomography techniques and methods, and of cross-sectional anatomy in order to obtain quality images
  • Must know methods of exposure to obtain clearly defined films and to set up and operate equipment, with an emphasis on reduction in patient radiation dose (ALARA - As Low As Reasonably Achievable).
  • Must have ability to recognize pathology and tailor examination to provide a complete diagnosis
  • Two years of experience as a Radiologic Technologist preferred
What The Special Procedure Radiographer Will Do
  • Review requests for radiologic procedures and schedule patients for specialized diagnostic procedures, arranging for patient transport to the procedure area and assisting patient in the completion of various radiology forms.
  • Ensure appropriate documentation by providing procedural and billing coding to all records
  • Determine the proper radiographic technique parameters. Adjusts, manipulates and controls a variety of on-site equipment to provide optimal accurate images
  • Provide and process specialized radiographic images using duplication and subtraction techniques. Consult with radiologists, physicians and the Lead to determine the need for additional images for comprehensive radiographic interpretation
  • Perform necessary reimaging, collect and forward all completed images to the appropriate location(s) for interpretation.
  • Scrub and assist the radiologist or surgeons in the performance of special procedures such as fluoroscopic examinations, and in minor surgical procedures required.
  • Prepare contrast media and other devices utilized in invasive diagnostic radiological procedures and assists radiologist in their use
  • Practice sterile, isolation, and infection control techniques to prevent contamination of the patient and staff. Clean and sterilize consumable and continued-use supplies utilized in procedures
  • Transfer patients to procedure tables, assist patients with positioning and apply immobilization devices as necessary. Explain procedures to patients to allay apprehensions and elicit cooperation
  • Administer contrast media and monitor patient for adverse reactions.
  • Operate radiology equipment (fluoroscopic, radiographic, and CT) computerized controls and, various peripheral equipment, enter commands necessary to visualize and manipulate screen images.
  • Manipulate tomographic images by changing mean and window through computerized controls, and changes degree of angulation to obtain best possible image.
  • Other duties as assigned.
