The role requires a valid South Carolina CDL, a current DOT physical, and completion of state bus driver training with a School Bus Driver's Certificate. PPT is required for new drivers and testing is part of the behind-the-wheel process.

Qualifications

• Must meet the NCLB requirements for a paraprofessional including 60 college credit hours or an Associate's Degree or Paraprofessional certificate.
• At least 18 years of age.
• Have a valid South Carolina Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with ≤4 points in the last 12 months; incidents may lead to probation, suspension, or termination.
• Maintain a current DOT Physical as determined by the district.
• Complete the state school bus driver training and obtain a School Bus Driver's Certificate (valid for 1 year; 10 hours annual training).
• Pass the School Bus Driver Physical Performance Test (PPT) for new drivers; it is part of the behind-the-wheel training and testing.
• Provide proof of American Citizenship or Employment Authorization.

Responsibilities

• Keep accurate records, time sheets and mileage reports.
• Drive bus safely and maintain a firm, safe atmosphere while minimizing discipline problems.
• Cooperate with investigations of liability for accidents involving state-owned buses.
• Assist with pupil insurance coverage details.
• Establish and maintain working relationships with students and parents.
• Keep bus equipment clean inside and out.
• Operate the bus in compliance with state and county guidelines.
