Job Description

Salary: $53,683.89-$99,647.38 (DOE), prorated based upon FTE with additional Sped stipend of $3,221.03.

Insurance: Generous Health, dental, and vision contribution from the district, currently up to $2,277 (based upon family coverage), prorated based upon FTE.

PERS Retirement: The district assumes and pays the 6% average employee contribution to the Oregon PERS system.

Function

The complex needs teacher is responsible for working collaboratively with a student’s team in providing educational instruction to students in a highly structured classroom environment designed to promote intellectual, emotional, and social growth. The teacher will design IEPs and deliver instruction in areas such as reading, ELA, Math, Science, and Daily Living Skills, and pre‑vocational skills. The teacher will be trained and required to understand the basic principles of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), STAR curriculum, implementation of picture exchange communication systems, and visual support systems.

Essential Functions

• Adapt classroom work and provide instruction to meet individualized learning plans within established lesson plans for students with significant social communication needs.
• Advise parents and/or legal guardians of student progress, communicating expectations, achievements, and methods for improvement or reinforcing classroom goals in the home environment.
• Assess student progress toward objectives, expectations, and goals (e.g., behavioral, motor development, communication skills, academic needs, vocational abilities) and provide feedback to students, parents, and administration.
• Collaborate with instructional staff, other school personnel, parents, and a variety of community resources to improve overall student outcomes and achieve classroom objectives.
• Direct assistant teachers, student teachers, instructional assistants, volunteers, and/or student workers to provide an effective classroom program and address individual student needs.
• Monitors students’ behavior/activities in a variety of educational environments (classroom, playground, field trips) to maintain a safe and positive learning environment.
• Participate in and/or coordinate a variety of meetings (PLC, IEP, Department, School) to convey and gather required information.
• Prepare written materials (grades, attendance, anecdotal records) to document progress and meet mandated requirements.
• Report incidents (altercations, suspected child abuse, suspected substance abuse) to maintain student safety and adhere to the Education Code and school policies.
• Administer, under supervision, first aid and assistance to medically fragile children (tube feeding, toileting, diapering).
• Respond to emergency situations to resolve safety concerns or direct to appropriate personnel.
• Provide a learning environment to facilitate eventual reintegration and coach regular education teachers to support reintegration back into the general education classroom.
• Comply with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act specifications.
• Participate in multi‑disciplinary team meetings as necessary.
• Lead, train, and supervise educational support assistants.
• Fulfill performance standards identified in the evaluation process.
• Fulfill the listed working conditions and physical effort required.
• Fulfill other related duties as assigned.
• Occasional travel between district locations using personal transportation.

Working Conditions

The employee works with groups of students and on a one‑to‑one basis. Students may be physically and mentally disabled, learning disabled, emotionally disturbed, or culturally different. Supervision requires the ability to stand for up to 45 consecutive minutes, to move rapidly to intervene in safety situations, and to endure inclement weather. The employee must be able to lift materials, boxes or equipment weighing up to 30 pounds. The employee must be tolerant and assertive to communicate effectively in confrontational and emotional situations involving students and their parents/guardians. Confidentiality is a top priority for this role.

• Complete all required special education forms and processes within specific timelines.

Education and Experience

Completion of coursework satisfying the requirement for issuance of a valid Oregon teaching license with appropriate endorsement in the designated assignment.

Demonstrated ability to teach students to be successful learners through student teaching, internship, or temporary/regular teaching experience.

Certification and Licensing

Special Education Teaching Endorsement required. Two years of successful teaching experience in a social communication skills, life skills, or other behavior support program preferred. Experience in ABA preferred.
