Qualifications

• Must have completed at least 2 years of study (48 semester hours) at an institution of higher education; or an associate’s degree; or met a rigorous standard of quality as determined by a formal assessment.
• Criminal background check and child abuse registry check required for all personnel.
• Demonstrate aptitude for, and interest in, working with young students.
• Attend teacher assistant workshop(s).
• Pleasing personality and professional demeanor.
• A satisfactory employment record.

Responsibilities

• Hear students in recitation, reading, and other curriculum tasks, guiding and helping them but not teaching them.
• Assist the teacher with an individualized and diagnostic approach to instruction.
• Provide assistance to individual needs of students while the teacher works with other groups.
• Supervise small group activities.
• Arrange displays and assist in setting up interest corners under the teacher’s directions.
• Assist absentees to make up work.
• Assist the teacher by operating classroom technologies.
• Assist regular program teachers with special education students mainstreamed into regular classes.
• Assist in supervision of students in halls, restrooms, playgrounds, or other areas; may involve diaper changing or toileting.
• Promote parent/community involvement in the instructional program.
• Assist with duties assigned by the teacher and substitute teachers.
• Record-keeping assistance.
• Abide by confidentiality regulations.
• Clear all parent communication through classroom teachers.
• Capable of physically restraining students in crisis situations; attend district-approved restraint training yearly.
• Performs other duties as assigned by administrators.
• Students may run, hit, bite, scratch, kick, and may become aggressive at times.
