Job summary

The Building Substitute for Special Education at Somerville Public Schools supports the Somerville High School Special Education Department by providing continuity of instruction and services when special education teachers are absent.

This role works exclusively within special education classrooms, implementing lesson plans, supporting students with diverse learning needs, and maintaining a safe, structured, and inclusive learning environment.

Qualifications

• DESE License as a Special Education Teacher for grades 9-12 is required.
• Ability to implement accommodations and supports per IEPs.
• Strong communication and organizational skills.

Responsibilities

• Provide continuity of instruction when teachers are absent.
• Implement IEPs and behavior plans in daily classroom activities.
• Maintain safe, structured, inclusive learning environments.
• Collaborate with special education staff and report to the principal.
• Review lesson plans left by the absent teacher and execute them.
• Dismiss students before leaving and maintain confidentiality.
