Job summary

Barnstable Public Schools is seeking a Special Education Personal Care Teacher Assistant (PCTA) to support students with disabilities at Barnstable High School in Hyannis, MA. The role assists teachers and staff in implementing individualized student plans and behavior programs, including health and hygiene support as needed.

Qualifications

• One year of college required; two years preferred.
• Must be physically able to lift up to 50 pounds.
• Interest in and exposure with students with disabilities.
• Basic understanding of child growth and development.
• Alternatives to the above qualifications may be acceptable with approval.

Responsibilities

• Demonstrate ethical behavior and maintain confidentiality of student information.
• Current restraint program certification.
• Work with individual students or small groups to reinforce learning of material or skills initially introduced by the teacher.
• Implement student behavior plans.
• Awareness of identified student health concerns, monitor/assist as appropriate in collaboration with teacher and nurse.
• Toileting/personal care/hygiene, when necessary.
• Awareness of student-assistance protocol.
• Assist with collecting, maintaining, and organizing data and portfolios, and/or work samples of student(s).
• Assist student(s) with organization of desk, homework, class work and materials.
• Assist special education teacher with implementation of student academic plans.
• When applicable, consult daily with teachers and other service providers.
• Facilitate student(s) social interaction.
• Support student(s) inclusion in the general education setting as consistent with student’s IEP.
• Other duties as assigned by the Principal or Director of Special Education.
