Job summary

Galax City School District seeks a Paraprofessional (Instructional/Special Education Aide) to support certified staff in classrooms and help meet instructional goals under supervision.

You will assist with reading, language arts, math, and computer instruction, work with students individually or in groups, and help with records and behavior management. A high school diploma or equivalent is required; college coursework or NCLB exam is preferred. This is a non-exempt, on-site position.

Qualifications

• High School diploma or equivalent.
• Successful completion of college coursework or passing of examination as required by NCLB.
• Prior experience working with students with special needs desirable.

Responsibilities

• Assists and guides students to reinforce reading, language arts, mathematics, computer instruction and other skills.
• Works with students individually and in small groups to reinforce learning.
• Assists professional staff in administration and correction of tests and assessments.
• Assists in classroom preparations and strategies for reinforcing instructional materials.
• Maintains records documenting student learning and performance.
• Supports classroom behavioral management to maintain a safe and orderly environment.
• Assists students in non-instructional areas (lunch, bus duty, playground, etc.).
• Accompanies students on field trips for supervision.
• Distributes and uses educational materials as needed.
• Assists with parent contact to foster involvement.
• Supports students with special needs to maximize inclusion and achievement.
