Job summary

The Chicago Lighthouse for People Who Are Blind or Visually Impaired seeks a Paraprofessional Teaching Assistant to support students with multiple disabilities under a classroom teacher's supervision. The position is full-time and located at the Chicago, IL office.

Responsibilities include implementing IEP-based goals, collecting data, assisting with daily living activities, and supporting mobility and field trips while maintaining safety and classroom order.

Qualifications

• ISBE approved para-professional certificate required or preferred.
• Experience in the educational setting preferred.
• Special education experience preferred.
• Ability to assist with lifting and transferring students; able to push wheelchairs.

Responsibilities

• Follow guidelines, goals and activities for each student as set by the teacher.
• Administer goals and supports for individual students under guidance of the Special Education Teacher.
• Collect and maintain goal-based and behavioral data throughout the day.
• Assist with physical and socialization needs of students.
• Assist students in activities of daily living ( toileting, feeding, hygiene, dressing etc.).
• Assist in orientation and mobility exercises under staff direction.
• Participate with students on field trips and swimming activities; observe and guard against accidents.
• Observe and assist in completing weekly, monthly, quarterly reports on student behavior and development.
• Attend staff meetings and help interpret the program to parents and guests.
• Attend curriculum and in-service meetings.
• Ensure student well-being and safety in school and agency premises.
• Keep classrooms clean and orderly.
• Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.
