Job summary

Berkley School District is seeking a Special Education Paraeducator to support a student at Pattengill Elementary School. The position is 30 hours per week and follows the Berkeley Education Association of Paraeducators (BEAP) compensation guidelines.

The role requires a high school diploma (2 years college preferred) and experience with students with disabilities. Responsibilities include in-class support, note-taking, small-group assistance, and material preparation, with CPI training

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma required; 2 years college preferred.
  • An experienced paraeducator with background assisting a student with disabilities.
  • Knowledge of reading, writing, math and science at K-8 level.
  • Positive, upbeat, caring and flexible; able to adjust to student needs.
  • Cooperative, dependable; shows initiative and accepts direction.
  • Knowledge of computer assisted instruction; typing desirable.
  • CPI training on file or willing to be trained.
  • Able to lift at least 50 pounds and assist student physically.

Responsibilities

  • Assist student in the general education classroom with note taking and testing.
  • Encourage independent toileting.
  • Assist with student participation in small groups as directed by the teacher.
  • Help check and correct papers and prepare materials under teacher direction.
  • Assist with audio-visual and computer setups and operation.
  • Monitor student instructional activities and assist as directed by the teacher.
  • Support caseload teacher with daily home-school assignment book/log.
  • May assist student at lunch time.

Qualifications
  • High School Diploma required: 2 years college preferred.
  • An experienced Paraeducator with background assisting a student with disabilities.
  • Applicant should have general knowledge of high school curriculum in reading, writing, math and science and possess skills in these areas at the K-8 school level.
  • The applicant must be a positive, upbeat individual who is caring and flexible and must be able to adjust to the physical and emotional needs of the student.
  • Applicant must be cooperative, dependable, show initiative and accept direction.
  • Knowledge of computer assisted instruction, typing is desirable.
  • C.P.I. training with current record on file or willing to be trained.
  • Able to lift at least 50 pounds, stoop, bend and kneel on one of both knees, as well as physically manage student if necessary.
Duties and Responsibilities
Instructional
  • Assist student in the general education classroom with note taking, testing, etc.
  • Assistant in encouraging independent toileting.
  • Assist with student's participation in small groups of students as directed by the classroom teacher.
  • Assist in checking and correction of papers and preparation of materials under the direction of the teacher.
  • Assist with audio-visual and computer setups and operation.
  • Monitor the instruction activities of the student and assist as appropriate or as directed by the classroom teacher.
  • Assist caseload teacher with daily home-school assignment book/log.
General Responsibilities
  • The applicant may need to assist student at lunch time.
  • The applicant will maintain flexible hours of employment and adjust working time to the student's needs as determined by the classroom teacher and other school professional staff.
  • Assist the teacher in maintaining inventory of equipment, supplies and materials.
  • Assist in maintaining files and records.
  • The applicant will perform other duties as assigned by the supervising teacher, special education coordinator and building administrator.
