POSITION OVERVIEW

TITLE: Nurse, RN, Special Education

STATUS/FLSA:Part-time; 5.5 hours per dayMonday - Friday

PAY SCHEDULE/GROUP: NURSING SERVICES / hourly

SUPERVISOR: Principal

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 190 Days. Salary determined by schedule set by the Board.

EVALUATION: Performance evaluated by the classroom teacher and Principal.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The purpose of this classification is to assist the District in providing the maximum educational opportunity for each Special Education student. Responsible for providing nursing and related program services to special need students, serving as a resource to parents, and maintaining a safe and sanitary environment to ensure the health and well‑being of special education students.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Provide feeding, changing, and cleaning services to special needs students.
  • Adhere to and implement district, state, and federal health and special education regulations.
  • Invoice Medicaid for the billable services provided to eligible students.
  • Administer medication to students as indicated on personal files; must have doctor’s orders.
  • Transport and lift students to foster mobility and enable activity.
  • Monitor each student daily for physical and mental changes; maintain and document individual health records.
  • Assist with First Aid care, and comfort ill or injured students as stipulated under policies and procedures.
  • Assist school nurses with training and updating documentation as needed.
  • Attend staff development programs such as First‑Aid, CPR, and AED.
  • Assist with Special Education student health needs during field trips and other activities including possible overnight trips.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES:

Essential Job Duties are intended to be examples of duties and are not intended to be all inclusive. There will be other duties as assigned.

  • Assist to position students in equipment (i.e. standers) as directed by Physical Therapist.
  • Assist with stetching and postion changes.
  • Assist teacher with any classroom duties.
  • Serve as back up for regular school nurse; provide necessary support in their absence.
  • Communicate with parents, staff, and doctors’ offices to ensure the health needs of students are being met as well as maintain records for students in the classroom.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of medications and ability to administer properly
  • Knowledge and ablility for tube feeding
  • Ability to lift and transfer students
  • Knowledgeable of Medicaid and knowledge in billing Medicaid
  • Knowledge of Medical history of each student in this class
  • Ability to care for any student or staff member in an emergency
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing
  • Basic knowledge of computers
  • Knowledge and ability to operate equipment in the classroom to include the lift and Rifton chairs
  • Knowledge of emergency procedures in this classroom and the school
  • Knowledgeable of the DHEC Exclusion List
  • Knowledge of school policies and procedures
  • Good organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USAGE:

Use computers for word processing, or custom applications or operate large equipment or machines.

EDUCATION:

Completion of Associate’s degree.

EXPERIENCE:

3 years experience

LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS:

REQUIRED: This position requires a SC Registered Nurse license. CPR, First Aid, and AED certifications.

PREFERRED: None.

WORKING CONDITION AND HAZARDS:

Indoor Environment, Outdoor Environment, Noise, Moisture and/or humidity, Potential for violence/physical altercations; Potential injury from transfering and lifting students; Exposure to bodily fluids.
