Qualifications

  • Master's degree required.
  • Valid Virginia teaching license with Exceptional Education endorsement required; Admin/ Supervision preferred.
  • Minimum of three years’ experience as an exceptional education teacher.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of regulations governing programming for students with disabilities.
  • Understanding of RTI and Child Find processes.
  • Ability to work effectively with students, parents, teachers, admins, and colleagues.
  • Demonstrated decision making, problem analysis and conflict resolution.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Bilingual skills preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates knowledge of Regulations Governing Special Education Programs for Children with Disabilities in Virginia and the Virginia Standards of Learning and Alternate Assessment Program.
  • Collaborates with school-based staff to conduct observations and provide evidenced-based instructional and behavioral strategies to both general and exceptional education teachers to improve outcomes for students with disabilities.
  • Meets with the building principal and/or exceptional education designees to provide exceptional education compliance updates, feedback on weekly observations, PD needs, and review of data (discipline, attendance, child find, etc.).
  • Collaborates with case managers to ensure IEPs are reviewed at least annually, contain parental consent for implementation, are finalized within VA IEP, and filed in the student’s cumulative record.
  • Ensures initial eligibility and/or triennial reviews are conducted within 65 business days of referral date and completes Indicators 9, 10, and 11 for newly eligible students.
  • Conducts regular IEP audits to ensure compliance with federal/state law and division policies.
  • Ensures students with disabilities are assigned an exceptional education case manager and caseloads are equitable.
  • Attends all eligibility and re-evaluation meetings.
  • Monitors discipline data for students with disabilities and attends manifestation determination meetings when applicable.
  • Ensures transfer student procedures include parental consent to implement out-of-state/out-of-division IEPs and completes transfer IEP within 30 days of arrival.
  • Completes documents when referring students to the Family Assessment and Planning Team (FAPT).
  • Attends all division-wide ICC meetings.
  • May assume teaching and/or intervention support duties (part-time ICC select schools).
  • Completes other duties as determined by school principal.
