Job summary

Harrison County School District is seeking a Special Education Teacher Assistant to support students with disabilities in a 184-day program. The role involves assisting the certified teacher, supervising small groups, and coordinating with families and school staff.

Qualifications

• Must have 2 years of study (48 semester hours) or an associate degree.
• Background checks include criminal background and child abuse registry.
• Demonstrate aptitude for and interest in working with young students.
• Attend teacher assistant workshop(s).
• Pleasing personality and professional demeanor.
• Satisfactory employment record.

Responsibilities

• Hear students in recitation and reading, guiding and helping them but not teaching them.
• Assist the teacher with an individualized and diagnostic approach to teaching.
• Provide assistance to individual student needs while the teacher works with other groups.
• Supervise small group activities.
• Arrange displays and assist in setting up interest corners under the teacher's directions.
• Assist absentees to make up work.
• Operate classroom technologies to support instruction.
• Assist regular program teachers with special education students in mainstream classes.
• Support supervision of students in halls, restrooms, playgrounds, or other areas of the school campus.
• Maintain confidentiality and clear parent communications through classroom teachers.
• Be capable of physically restraining students in crisis and attend district-provided restraint training yearly.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
