We are working to reinvent traditional financial systems and advance locally-led solutions that create economic mobility and generational wealth. Through our continuum of financial, knowledge, and social capital, we offer a comprehensive package of loan products, impact investment opportunities, training and business advising programs, and technology solutions.

Our holistic and streamlined approach offers comprehensive solutions for small business entrepreneurs, real estate developers, community-based organizations, and local leaders at every stage of growth, from inception to expansion. When these leaders have the opportunity to succeed, their communities, their residents – and our country – thrive.

Position Summary

The Special Assets Portfolio Officer is responsible for managing a portfolio of high risk and non-performing/distressed loans, including assisting the Special Assets management with potential disposition and foreclosure of community development real estate and non-real estate loan transactions within a variety of sectors such as housing, health care, education, community development and other loan types. This position reports to the Special Assets Risk Manager and can be remote or based near any of our offices in Arlington, VA, New York, NY, Detroit, MI, Oakland, CA, or Austin, TX.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Manage a portfolio of high risk and non-performing (special assets) – including community development loans, participation loans and other specialized programs – under the direction of the Special Assets Risk Manager. Develop and implement workout strategies to bring loans current, which may involve restructuring, modifying repayment terms, or negotiating settlements.
  • Lead borrower communications through phone, calls, site visits, in person meetings, and written correspondence. Approach these conversations with empathy, professionalism, maintaining composure in high-pressure situations. Collaborate with legal counsel to prepare and deliver formal notices, including reservation of rights, defaults, and demand letters as needed.
  • Evaluate borrower performance by analyzing financial statements, reviewing loan and project documents, monitoring covenant compliance, and conducting periodic loan reviews for borrowers facing financial stress or potential default. Use critical thinking and attention to detail to identify issues and assess risk.
  • Prepare and submit loan modifications and post-closing amendments—including maturity extensions, payment adjustments, and other changes—according to departmental procedures. Coordinate approvals with the Special Assets Risk Manager, Credit team members, and the Head of Small Business and Community Development Credit. Demonstrate strong communication and collaboration when presenting proposals and obtaining approvals.
  • Maintain accurate loan servicing records by proactively communicating updates to the Servicing team, including changes to risk ratings, delinquencies, non-accruals, impairments, and deferrals. Ensure all communication logs are maintained in the appropriate systems with accountability and organization.
  • Ensure regulatory and policy compliance during all workout and loan resolution processes. Follow organizational policies and procedures and collaborate with the Special Assets Risk Manager, Credit team, legal counsel, and other stakeholders to manage complex issues and mitigate risk. Integrity and adherence to policy are essential in managing these processes.
  • Coordinate with co-lenders, financial partners, and other Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFIs) involved in the capital stack to facilitate negotiations and aligned decision-making in support of project and borrower recovery. Leverage negotiation skills and emotional intelligence to build consensus and foster positive working relationships.
  • Support the Special Assets Risk Manager with special projects, reporting, or other responsibilities, as assigned. Demonstrate flexibility and a willingness to take on varied tasks.
  • Travel up to 5% as necessary.
  • Education and Experience: High School Diploma or equivalent with 5 years of relevant experience, or a bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, real estate, or a related field, with at least 2 years of professional experience in special assets, commercial loan workouts, and portfolio/asset management.
  • Relevant Experience: Prior experience in commercial loan workouts, collections, portfolio management, and familiarity with sectors such as affordable housing, LIHTC (Low-Income Housing Tax Credit), New Markets Tax Credit, healthcare, education, CDFIs, and/or affordable housing organizations is a plus.
  • Financial and Communication Skills: Strong financial analysis abilities and excellent communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
