Job summary

South Bend Community School Corp. seeks a Special Education Paraprofessional to support students with unique learning needs in a school setting.

You will assist teachers with instruction, implement IEPs and BIPs, and help students follow schedules while maintaining confidentiality and a supportive classroom environment.

Qualifications

• Pass Para-Pro examination or have 60 hours of college credit.
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Experience with children or students with special needs helpful.
• Ability to record and summarize data as directed by the teacher.
• Willingness to participate in ongoing training.
• Understand needs described in student IEPs.
• Ability to assist with lifting and safety requirements as needed.

Responsibilities

• Support the needs of students with special education in the building.
• Assist substitute teachers and paraprofessionals with daily activities and schedules.
• Help students achieve IEP goals and objectives.
• Implement behavior and support plans described in IEPs.
• Assist with classroom instruction under general and special education teachers.
• Provide toileting/diapering assistance when required.
• Assist with feeding as needed.

Position Summary

• Monitor students during arrival, lunch, recess and dismissal times
• Assist in classroom instruction under the direction of the general education and special education teacher
• Implement Behavioral Intervention Plans (BIPs) as written in the IEP
• Assist students in following classroom schedule
• Record and summarize data as directed by the special education teacher
• Maintain daily communication with special education teacher
• Assist in the modification/accommodation of classroom work according to the individual student’s IEP
• Assist the special education teacher in providing appropriate individualized services to assist students in their inclusionary services
• Maintain confidentiality of student information
• Follow all employee practices listed in the Paraprofessional Employees Agreement

Qualifications

• Pass Para-Pro examination or have 60 hours of college credit
• High school diploma
• Previous experience with children or students with special needs.
• Demonstrated ability to work well with others and understand individual students’ needs
• Ability to accurately record and summarize data as directed by the special education teacher
• Willingness to participate in pre and ongoing training programs
• Understand the individual needs of students as described in their IEP
• Ability to lift student if necessary (all students over 40 pounds are a 2-person lift).

Duties

• Support the needs of special education students or other special education staff in the building as directed

Works in standard office and school building environments. Must be able to work regularly scheduled hours. Must be able to handle stress.
