Job summary

Harborview Medical Center is seeking a Medical Interpreter 2 - Spanish to provide interpretation services for patients with limited English proficiency. The role supports access to medical care through in-person, telephone, or video interpretation and written translation with attention to cultural context.

The position is full-time, 40 hours per week, day shift, within the University of Washington system, with responsibilities spanning clinical encounters, staff training, and form completion.

Qualifications

• High school graduation or equivalent AND three years interpretation and translation experience in a clinic or hospital setting.
• Washington State Department of Social and Health Services certification or qualification OR equivalent education/experience.

Responsibilities

• Provide interpretation for target languages in clinical encounters.
• Deliver accurate rendition of written text into oral messages between patient and provider or staff.
• Offer spoken language interpretation in person, by telephone or video to facilitate communication.
• Encourage direct communication between patients and provider or staff.
• Adhere to ethical practices to guide interpretation.
• Provide expert written translation including initial translation and subsequent reviews, editing and formatting.
• Orient and train medical center staff on language access topics.
• Explain and clarify cultural differences and assist patients with completing forms.
• Complete documentation related to interpretation encounters.
