Job summary

Varda Space Industries in El Segundo, CA seeks a Thermal Hardware and Test Engineer II to own thermal hardware for ground and spacecraft systems. This hands-on role spans mechanical, electrical, fluid, and control disciplines with opportunities to design, fabricate, and commission thermal solutions.

You will develop active and passive thermal control systems, size thermomechanical hardware, perform CAD work, testing, instrumentation, and data analysis while coordinating across teams to ensure

Qualifications

• B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline, 1–3+ years experience.
• 3+ years applying engineering principles to thermal design, test, fabrication in a manufacturing setting.
• Proficiency with Thermal Desktop or SINDA/FLUINT for detailed thermal analysis.
• Experience anchoring models to test/flight data.
• Experience in planning/executing Thermal Vacuum Chamber tests.
• MATLAB or equivalent for data processing/automation.
• Familiarity with SMC-S-016 thermal qualification requirements.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Lead end-to-end development of thermal hardware and test infrastructure.
• Develop active and passive thermal control systems for payloads and vehicles.
• Inform manufacturing and integration of thermal/fluid hardware.
• Conduct TVac acceptance and qualification tests.
• Analyze impacts of design decisions on packing, environmental loads, and system performance.
• Assemble designs, test rigs, and fixtures to support development activities.
• Implement DAQ solutions with sensors, transducers, actuators, PLCs, and embedded controllers.
• Generate procedures, schematics, and test documentation.
• Apply first-principles thinking to diagnose issues and improve reliability to >99% uptime.
