Job summary

AeroVironment's Space Technologies division seeks a Control Systems Engineer to design, test, and analyze advanced control systems for laser communications payloads. You will translate continuous-time control theory into robust discrete-time implementations, perform system identification, and work with gimbals in the lab.

This hands‑on role requires rigorous experimentation, documentation, and cross‑disciplinary collaboration.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or a Scientific discipline from an accredited four‑year university.
Strong academic foundation in classical and state‑space control theory.
Hands‑on experience in a laboratory environment setting up, testing, and experimenting with control system technologies.
Experience with high bandwidth control systems design.
Experience working with gimbals and/or other highly actuated mechanical systems.
Demonstrated ability to translate continuous‑time control algorithms into discrete‑time systems.
US citizenship to obtain/maintain a security clearance.
Proficiency with MATLAB/Simulink and Microsoft Office.

Responsibilities

Algorithm & System Design: Develop robust control algorithms and translate continuous‑time models into discrete‑time implementations.
System Identification & Analysis: Conduct rigorous system identification and performance analysis to optimize precision pointing and tracking.
Hardware Integration: Work directly with gimbals and other advanced actuated mechanical systems in a laboratory environment.
Requirements & Testing: Analyze system‑level requirements and conduct testing and characterization of electro‑optic payloads.
