Job summary

Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) has an opening for a NSRL staff member to join the NSRL facility. The NSRL uses proton and heavy ion beams from the Lab's Booster synchrotron to simulate the radiation environment of space.

NASA conducts radiobiology experiments to learn about the effects of space radiation on astronauts. This onsite role requires coordinating with researchers and main control room operators, preparing beam, running experiments, and maintaining equipment.

Qualifications

• BS in Physics or Engineering or related field.
• At least three years of relevant experience in particle, nuclear, or radiation physics.
• Clear and concise oral and written communication skills.
• Computing proficiency including Excel.
• Ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

• Prepare beam for experiments with ion source and operators; tune, shape, archive, and calibrate beam.
• Deliver exposures and distribute run summaries to researchers.
• Maintain daily records of NSRL activities for NASA.
• Assist researchers in setting up and running equipment during exposure time.
• Develop technical and research projects for NSRL.
• Maintain equipment used to monitor and control the beam.
• Communicate with MCR and Ion Source Operators about accelerator performance.
• Respond to alarms and emergencies per SOPs.
• Identify hazards and implement risk controls.
