Job summary

Brookhaven National Laboratory in Upton, NY, seeks a NSRL staff member to support beam preparation, tuning, and calibration for space radiation experiments. You will assist researchers and control room operators, archive run data, and maintain equipment performance in a high-interaction, fast-paced environment.

The ideal candidate has a BS in Physics or Engineering, 3+ years in particle, nuclear, or radiation physics, and proven communication and Excel skills.

Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science degree in Physics, Engineering or a related field.
• At least three years' relevant experience in particle physics, nuclear physics or radiation physics.
• Clear and concise oral and written communication skills.
• Computing proficiency to include Excel spreadsheets.
• Flexibility to work evenings or weekends as needed.
• Master’s degree in Physics is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Work with Ion Source and Main Control Room Operators to prepare beam for experiments, tune and shape beam, archive, and calibrate beam.
• Deliver exposures and distribute run summaries to researchers.
• Daily recordkeeping of NSRL activities for NASA.
• Assist researchers in setting up and running equipment during exposure time.
• Develop technical and research projects for NSRL.
• Maintain equipment used to monitor and control the beam.
• Communicate with MCR Operators and Ion Source Operators regarding accelerator performance.
• Respond to alarms or emergencies per SOPs.
• Identify hazards and implement controls to minimize risks.
