Job summary

The New School's Parsons School for Design is seeking an Assistant Manager of the Sound Office for the Making Center. This role supports a 70,000 sq.ft. complex with labs, studios, and equipment across sound, video, and media production.

You will supervise technicians and student workers, manage budgets, and coordinate with faculty and staff to ensure safe, effective operations year-round. The position is primarily on campus, with potential hybrid arrangements considered.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree and 3-5 years of relevant or professional experience within the industry.
• Flexible schedule - ability to work non-traditional hours including nights and weekends.
• Completion of university required staff trainings and necessary COFs within 6 months.
• Advanced knowledge of sound practices and related equipment/software.
• Experience maintaining, repairing, and troubleshooting equipment/tools.
• Technical knowledge of sound-based analog/digital tech (monitors, mics, mixers).
• Familiarity with Windows/macOS, large-scale hardware/software deployment, network systems.

Responsibilities

• Maintain a clean and safe working environment and uphold a respectful shop culture.
• Oversee daily workings of the Sound Office, supporting sound, video, and related equipment.
• Manage full-time technicians and student workers: interviews, hiring, training, scheduling, accountability.
• Manage a fixed budget: tracking expenses, inventories, schedules, repairs.
• Assist supervisor with facility projects, shows, installations, and purchasing recommendations.
• Organize calendars and communications for facilities, create website updates and documentation.
