Job summary

Con Edison is seeking an Optical Network Engineer to design, deploy, and maintain mission-critical optical networks supporting utility operations. The role covers DWDM, fiber, microwave, DC power, and related systems across control centers, substations, data centers, and sites.

The engineer will develop architectures, plans, and BOMs, implement transport networks for SCADA/EMS, and perform commissioning, testing, and upgrades with travel across NYC and surrounding regions.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's, Associate, or high school diploma/GED with relevant IT/telecommunications experience.
  • Strong knowledge of DWDM, SONET, TDM, Ethernet, MPLS, and optical transmission theory.
  • Experience with optical equipment commissioning, network validation, and troubleshooting.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Valid driver's license and personal vehicle for travel.

Responsibilities

  • Design, engineer, and maintain mission-critical optical networks supporting utility operations.
  • Develop network architectures, plans, scopes of work, BOMs, specs, and project schedules.
  • Design and implement optical transport networks for SCADA, EMS, OT, and data connectivity.
  • Perform network engineering activities across energy control centers, substations, data centers, and sites.
  • Commission, test, troubleshoot, and upgrade optical and telecom equipment (DWDM, MPLS, Ethernet, microwave, TDM, Fibre Channel).
  • Utilize optical test equipment for fiber characterization and performance verification.
  • Install, route, label, inspect, clean, and document fiber cabling and jumper connections.
  • Maintain and update DWDM designs including wavelength plans and loss budgets.
  • Operate and troubleshoot DWDM network elements and supporting systems.
  • Support microwave radio network engineering, including path analysis and deployment.
  • Supervise and coordinate telecom vendors and contractors; review as-built docs.
  • Develop and maintain engineering standards, templates, and network documentation.
  • Participate in emergency restoration efforts and off-hour work as needed.
  • Travel throughout service territories to support engineering, testing, and maintenance.
  • Handle physical tasks such as transporting telecom equipment and tools.
  • Prepare concise technical, engineering, and operational documentation.
  • Collaborate with engineers, project managers, vendors, contractors, and stakeholders.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of emerging telecom technologies and best practices.
  • Ensure safety compliance and PPE usage.

Job Summary (List Format) Optical Network Engineer, Corporate Communications Transmission Network (CCTN):
  • Design, Engineer, and Maintain mission-critical optical communications networks (DWDM, fiber, microwave, DC power) supporting Con Edison and Orange & Rockland utility operations.
  • Develop network architectures, engineering plans, scopes of work, bills of materials, technical specifications, and project schedules for telecommunications infrastructure projects.
  • Design and implement optical transport networks for SCADA, EMS, OT systems, RTUs, voice, cybersecurity, and corporate data connectivity.
  • Perform network engineering activities supporting communications between energy control centers, substations, generating stations, data centers, microwave sites, and corporate facilities.
  • Commission, test, troubleshoot, and upgrade optical and telecommunications equipment (DWDM, MPLS, Ethernet, microwave, TDM, Fibre Channel).
  • Utilize optical test equipment (OTDR, power meters, spectrum analyzers) for fiber characterization, circuit validation, and performance verification.
  • Install, route, label, inspect, clean, and document fiber-optic cabling and jumper connections to ensure proper connectivity and network integrity.
  • Maintain and update DWDM network designs, including wavelength plans, loss budgets, equipment configurations, capacity expansions, and modernization initiatives.
  • Operate, monitor, and troubleshoot DWDM network elements and supporting systems (transponders, amplifiers, ROADMs, multiplexers, network management platforms).
  • Support microwave radio network engineering, including path analysis, equipment deployment, integration, performance checks, and maintenance.
  • Supervise and coordinate telecommunications vendors and contractors; review installation quality and verify as-built documentation.
  • Develop and maintain engineering standards, templates, configuration standards, and network documentation.
  • Participate in emergency restoration efforts and support off-hour work as needed for network implementations, maintenance, and service restoration.
  • Travel throughout service territories (NYC, Westchester, Hudson Valley, NJ, Orange & Rockland) to support engineering, implementation, testing, maintenance, and emergency response.
  • Handle physical tasks such as transporting, loading, unloading, and moving telecommunications equipment, materials, and tools.
  • Prepare clear and concise technical, engineering, and operational documentation.
  • Collaborate effectively with engineers, project managers, vendors, contractors, and stakeholders.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of emerging telecommunications technologies and best practices.
  • Ensure compliance with safety protocols, including wearing required PPE.
Required Qualifications:
