Position Purpose: The Sommelier is responsible for ensuring the quality and consistency of the restaurant’s beverage program, maintaining and enhancing service, and educating staff. This person recommends and sells wines and other beverages to guests to ensure their enjoyment.

Key Responsibilities/Accountabilities:

  • Logistics: Responsible for departmental logistics efficiency, monitoring what works and proposing improvements, such as increasing wine sales and cellar organization.
  • Assist and conduct wine training for new and existing staff, generate training materials.
  • Monitor wine deliveries, BIN # assignments, proper storage, and organization of the wine cellar.

Dining Room Service:

  • Provide friendly, courteous, and efficient service, maintaining proper posture and eye contact.
  • Collaborate with the beverage team, assist with orders as needed.
  • Be knowledgeable about different types and regions of wines.
  • Help customers choose wines suitable for meals and budgets.
  • Resolve guest wine complaints effectively.
  • Offer wine expertise, guide guests, oversee wine service, and be present on the floor.
  • Present, represent, and suggest wines, executing service step by step.
  • Support staff with wine and service issues.
  • Create personalized service by building relationships and noting guest preferences.
  • Anticipate guest needs, recommend after-dinner drinks, and assist in service.
  • Have food menu knowledge for wine pairings.
  • Maintain presence on the floor and perform quality checks.

Product Presentation & Staff Education:

  • Ensure wine quality and proper glassware and decanter levels.
  • Set up ice buckets and glassware for service.
  • Train staff on bottle presentation, decanting, pouring, and proper verbiage, including regular tastings and wine classes.
  • Communicate wine inventory status and new wines to staff.
  • Report menu discrepancies and handle wine-related logistics in absence of the receiver.

Self-Development: Maintain and develop your wine knowledge continuously, with company support for educational goals.

Minimum Essential Requirements:

  • Ability to work as part of a team, personal cleanliness.
  • Effective communication in English.
  • Basic food handling, preparation, and cleaning skills preferred.
  • Time management and ability to work under pressure.
  • Active listening and learning skills.
  • Reading and speaking comprehension.
  • Discipline to follow standards.
  • Ability to lift up to 30 lbs.
