Job summary

The City of Peoria is seeking a Solid Waste Inspector to perform inspections and monitor programs ensuring regulatory compliance for waste and recycling. You will engage residents and businesses, educate about the recycling program and proper disposal of refuse, and address service concerns.

Ideal candidates have experience in solid waste or environmental programs, strong communication skills, and the ability to work collaboratively. Some evenings and weekends may be required.

Responsibilities

• Perform inspections and monitor programs to ensure regulatory compliance for waste and recycling.
• Provide public education and outreach on Peoria's recycling program and disposal guidance.
• Handle customer concerns related to solid waste collection and services; conduct public contact.
• Carry out field inspections, document findings, and maintain records; track data.
• Investigate citizen complaints and prepare/ deliver presentations; may require evenings/weekends.

Salary Range: Min $29.00 - Mid $32.45 - Max $35.90

Department: Public Works

Minimum Requirements:

• Education: High school plus additional course work (equivalent to up to 1 year at a Community College or equivalent resulting in accumulation of similar knowledge and abilities)
• Experience: 1-2 years experience. Moderate previous experience required in the same or similar previous positions.

Physical Requirements:

• Work requires heavy physical exertion and effort.
• Forces exerted are equivalent to lifting between 25 and 50 pounds.

Certifications & Other Requirements:

• Valid Arizona Class “D” Drivers License upon hire.
• Hazard Communication 40-hour Certification within six (6) months of hire.

The Public Works Solid Waste division has an excellent opportunity for a Solid Waste Inspector. This position performs inspections and monitors programs and services for regulatory compliance (waste and recycling collection and household hazardous waste). Participate in activities involving public education and outreach programs providing information regarding the City’s recycling program and proper disposal information of refuse to City residents. This position also performs customer service duties by handling customer concerns related to solid waste collection, disposal, and other services. Performs a variety of technical and field inspection work to monitor compliance with trash collection and recycling rules and regulations; performs public contact work; investigates and resolves citizen complaints; provides information and answers questions; prepares and conducts presentations; performs related work as required. The ideal candidate for this position will have:

• Experience in solid waste, recycling, environmental programs, inspections, or regulatory compliance.
• Strong knowledge of waste diversion, recycling practices, refuse collection, and related regulations.
• Excellent communication and customer service skills, with the ability to educate residents and businesses and address questions or concerns.
• Strong organizational and problem-solving skills, with attention to detail when conducting inspections, documenting findings, maintaining records, and tracking data.
• Ability to work collaboratively with internal departments, residents, businesses, and community partners to promote compliance, recycling, and waste reduction programs.
