Job summary

A leading company is seeking a Solid Waste Driver to operate collection trucks and equipment for waste management. The role requires effective communication with customers, vehicle inspections, and adherence to safety protocols. Candidates must have a valid Arizona Class B CDL and a high school diploma or GED. Preference is given to community members and veterans. This is a non-exempt driving position requiring weekend and holiday work.

Job description

Under general supervision of the Solid Waste Supervisor, drives and operates a variety of solid waste refuse trucks and equipment for collection, transport, and disposal of Residential, Commercial, and Bulk waste and recyclables. Retrieves and logs completed work orders into a computer database. Provides coverage in the absence of the supervisor. Required to work weekends and holidays, as scheduled.

This position is treated as an FLSA non-exempt and considered a DRIVING position.

Essential Functions:
  1. Safely and effectively operates a variety of Solid Waste collection trucks and equipment requiring an Arizona Class B Commercial Driver’s License, including Front Load, Automated Side Loader, Roll Off, Rear Loader, Hook Lift, Front End Tractor, and pickup trucks. Separates recyclable from non-recyclable trash and ensures proper disposal according to guidelines.
  2. Communicates verbally with customers regarding collection concerns, general information, or problems. Informs supervisor daily of work order completion status.
  3. Inspects vehicles and equipment before and after use, checking for damage, fluid levels, leaks, safety equipment, lights, and tools. Reviews inspection forms and schedules repairs, notifying the supervisor of issues.
  4. Reviews and suggests improvements to routes to enhance efficiency and customer service. Assists in training staff on safe vehicle and equipment operation.
  5. Repairs and paints refuse and recycling containers. Replaces damaged containers and delivers new ones to customers.
  6. Supports community events involving the delivery, setup, and removal of waste containers.
  7. Ensures safe working practices and adherence to rules.
  8. Acts as a Supervisor when appointed, in the absence of the permanent Supervisor.
  9. Performs other duties as assigned by the Supervisor and/or Manager.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics:
  • Knowledge of the community’s history, culture, laws, rules, and traditions.
  • Knowledge of addresses for community locations.
  • Knowledge of operating procedures for waste collection vehicles and equipment.
  • Knowledge of relevant codes and regulations.
  • Skill in scheduling, prioritizing, and training staff.
  • Skill in understanding instructions and vehicle maintenance.
  • Skill in problem-solving related to waste collection.
  • Skill in establishing effective relationships with community members and officials.
  • Skill in interpreting laws, policies, and regulations.
  • Skill in using computers and related software.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with community members and staff.
  • Ability to use computers for work orders and reports.
  • Physical ability to walk, stoop, climb, bend, and move heavy objects (>20 lbs) over long distances.
  • Ability to work in various weather conditions and drive long hours.
Education & Experience:

High school diploma or GED, with two years of experience as a sanitation driver or related field, including knowledge of collection procedures and equipment. Must possess and maintain a valid Arizona Class (B) CDL with GVWR over 26,000 pounds.

Additional Information:

Equivalent combinations of education and experience are considered. Enrolled community members who qualify may be considered under SRPMIC Policy 2-19, Underfill. Must work evenings, holidays, and weekends. Pre-employment drug, alcohol, and background checks are required.

Preference is given to qualified community members, veterans, and Native Americans, with documentation required at application submission.
