Job description

Position Summary

Under the immediate supervision of a supervisor, the Equipment Operator safely operates plant mobile heavy equipment, including haul trucks, motor graders, water trucks, cranes, etc., to transport raw materials from the pit to the plant efficiently and safely, maximizing loading capacity.

Essential Functions

  1. Learn to operate all other mobile equipment, such as haul trucks, motor graders, water trucks, loaders, and cranes.
  2. Work the 2nd shift, from 1 pm to 11 pm.
  3. Assist in plant repairs and clean-up activities.
  4. Perform pre-shift safety inspections on equipment.
  5. Conduct preventative maintenance and report repairs to shop personnel.
  6. Maintain good housekeeping of equipment.
  7. Follow MSHA and plant safety rules and regulations.
  8. Perform duties independently with minimal supervision.

Minimum Education and Experience

  1. High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  2. Prefer 3-5 years of experience operating heavy mobile equipment.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  1. Ability to read equipment operating manuals.
  2. Complete pre-shift inspection reports.
  3. Communicate effectively in English via radio or CB.
  4. Basic mathematical skills for daily reports.
  5. Ability to wear all required safety equipment.
  6. Perform duties safely and responsibly.
  7. Read and interpret gauges accurately.
  8. Proven ability to work effectively in a team environment.

Physical Requirements

  1. Good hand/eye coordination and ability to operate hand/foot controls.
  2. Good vision to perceive depth at close and up to 150 feet.
  3. Ability to mount and dismount equipment for operation and maintenance.
  4. Ability to bend, stoop, climb, and reach around mobile equipment.
  5. Capable of lifting up to 50 lbs.
  6. Ability to sit and operate equipment for extended periods, up to 10+ hours per day.
  7. Work outdoors in all weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, wetness, dryness, dust, and noise.
  8. Work at various heights as required.

Working Conditions

Larger equipment is typically air-conditioned. Outside work may be required in all weather conditions—heat, cold, wet, or dry—and may involve exposure to dust, sand, gravel, diesel exhaust, etc.
