Job summary

The City of Hickory is seeking a dependable Waste Collector to assist in the collection, transport, and disposal of solid waste, helping maintain a clean environment and provide timely service to the public. The role involves riding with equipment operators, loading and unloading waste, performing routine equipment maintenance, and ensuring vehicles are clean and properly serviced before routes.

A valid North Carolina driver's license is required; post-offer functional prework screen and drug

Qualifications

• Knowledge of residential refuse, leaf and limb and recycling collection procedures.
• Knowledge of departmental and safety rules and regulations.
• Ability to read, write and perform basic mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.
• No experience requirements.
• Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of North Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.

Responsibilities

• Ride with equipment operators to collect solid waste.
• Load and unload materials.
• Perform routine maintenance on equipment (greasing, checking air pressure, oil and other fluids) and report major repairs.
• Load and unload refuse, leaf and limb wastes, or recyclables into the truck.
• Assist in ensuring the truck is cleaned, serviced, and in proper operating condition before leaving on route.
• Assist in washing vehicles and equipment.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.
