Job summary

ION Storage Systems in Beltsville, MD seeks Battery Scientist I or II to advance solid-state lithium-based battery research at the cell level. You will characterize materials, assemble prototypes, run electrochemical tests, and analyze data to push performance and reliability in a startup environment.

The role offers early career growth, with Senior Scientist II opportunities to lead campaigns, mentor juniors, and contribute to safety-driven lab practices within the Cell R&D group.

Qualifications

• Hands-on experience measuring and analyzing material properties in lab settings.
• Ability to relate structure/property relationships to performance.
• Experience interpreting experimental data and drawing conclusions.
• Strong technical communication and teamwork skills.
• Adaptability to startup pace and novel challenges.

Responsibilities

• Learn and perform research on electrochemical cells and materials.
• Fabricate prototypes and conduct testing with rigor and statistics.
• Design and interpret experiments to improve electrochemical performance.
• Document results and communicate uncertainties within teams.
• Support design of tools and fixtures for assembly and testing.
• Troubleshoot results, equipment issues, and root causes.
• Stay current with battery literature and share methods with the team.
• Improve R&D processes for reproducibility, yield, and safety.
• Follow safety protocols for chemicals and cell handling.
