Job summary

Ion Storage Systems Inc. in Beltsville, MD is seeking a senior engineering professional to support and expand a first-of-its-kind prototype line for solid-state cell and anode development.

You will collaborate with mechanical, electrical, and automation teams to accelerate process speed, yield, and reliability. Ideal candidates bring 10+ years of hands-on engineering experience, strong CAD skills, and a background in scalable hardware/software for automated systems.

Responsibilities

  • Support the existing prototype line to improve reliability, quality and uptime.
  • Lead root-cause investigations and drive corrective actions.
  • Own design, build, and commissioning of new equipment and fixtures from concept to installation.
  • Translate process requirements into robust hardware and automation specs.
  • Mentor engineers and technicians and review designs and troubleshooting approaches.
  • Collaborate with process/cell engineers on upstream/downstream implications of equipment design.
  • Contribute to engineering standards and documentation for a scaling organization.
  • Manage priorities across multiple projects with minimal oversight.

Overview

ION Storage Systems offers solid-state battery solutions focusing on performance, safety, and durability. We are building a scalable, modular ceramic structure for next-generation energy storage and are backed by leading venture capital firms. As part of the Cell Engineering group, you will contribute to the development and optimization of a first-of-its-kind prototyping line for solid-state cells and anodes. This is a prototype line working toward volume production and new products. You will collaborate with cell, mechanical, equipment, and automation engineers and technicians to improve process speed, yield, and reliability.

Responsibilities
  • Work collaboratively to support the existing prototype line, identifying key levers to drive process reliability, quality, and uptime
  • Lead root-cause investigations for equipment and process failures and drive corrective/preventive actions to closure
  • Own the design, build, and commissioning of new equipment and fixtures from concept through installation, across mechanical, electrical, and controls disciplines
  • Translate process requirements into robust hardware and automation specifications
  • Mentor and provide technical guidance to engineers and technicians; review designs and troubleshooting approaches
  • Partner with process/cell engineers to understand upstream process needs and downstream implications of equipment design choices
  • Contribute to engineering standards and documentation practices suitable for a scaling organization
  • Independently manage priorities across multiple ongoing projects with minimal oversight
Experience and Qualifications
  • Strong hands-on engineering experience
  • Experience building first-of-its-kind hardware and software for automated systems
  • Strong mechanical design fundamentals with 3D CAD experience for equipment, tooling, fixtures, and assembly aids
  • B.Eng., M.Eng., B.Sc., or M.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical/Controls Engineering, Mechatronics, or related discipline
  • 10+ years of work experience (post B.S.)
  • Preferred: experience in cell assembly, semiconductor, or related field
  • Preferred: experience standing up a pilot or prototype line from an early stage
  • Preferred: experience working with equipment vendors on custom or first-of-a-kind tooling
Physical Demands and Working Conditions
  • Work onsite at ION's Beltsville, MD facility; hands-on and collaborative role requiring regular presence
  • Wear PPE including lab coat, gloves, safety glasses, and safety-toe shoes
  • Ability to stand, bend, and move around equipment and lab benches for extended periods
  • Department: Cell Engineering
